Edward Kovac Obituary

Edward J. Kovac Sr.
Edward J. Kovac, Sr., aged 80, of Easton, Connecticut, beloved husband of Gloria R. Kovac, passed away peacefully at home on April 26, 2023. He was born and raised in Bridgeport, Connecticut and graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1960. Ed earned a bachelor's degree from Willimantic State Teachers College and a master's degree from the University of Bridgeport. He devoted his life to the service of others and his community. Ed was known for his 35-year career in the City of Bridgeport public schools, as a teacher, guidance counselor, administrator, and as an active member of his union. He served the town of Easton in numerous roles, including as a member of the board of ethics and as a member of the regional board of education. Ed was a longstanding member of the Easton Volunteer Fire Department. He served as the President and was instrumental in the completion of a new firehouse building for the department in 1989. After his retirement in 2001, he worked until 2018 as an auxiliary police officer for the town of Fairfield.
In addition to his wife of 54 years, he is survived by his daughter Julie and her husband Andrew Ray of Washington D.C., and his son Edward Jr. and partner Julie Barylski of Easton, Connecticut. One of his greatest joys was his grandchildren: Colin (23), Madeleine (20), Gwendolyn (20), Michael (18), Eve (18), and Tillman (15). Ed found comfort and peace in providing for his family, and he instilled the importance of an education and hard work in his children and grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 16, 2023 at 10:00 A.M. It will be held at Notre Dame of Easton Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Long Hill Burial Grounds, Trumbull. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association ( www.lbda.org ). Dear Gloria and family:
As a Special Officer with the Fairfield Police Department for many years, I had the great pleasure of working with Ed on many occasions. His calm demeanor, intelligent conversation, and fantastic sense of humor gave me great pleasure whenever our paths crossed. He also broaden my horizons in the area of pizza. He knew every good pizza restaurant in Connecticut
My prayers are with your entire family. He was truly one of the good guys.

Dear Gloria and family, No time on earth is long enough to share with those we love. Nothing can prepare our hearts to say goodbye. I was fortunate enough to know and work with your beloved Edward throughout the Bridgeport School System. When someone as special as Ed lives the way he did, his legacy will live on in the many lives he touched. I learned from Ed that education is an evolving mosaic composed of bits of ourselves, our talents, and our experiences. Even the smallest pieces are essential to the magnificence of the whole. Ed knew that no act of kindness, no matter how small is ever wasted. He practiced the only true manner in achieving joy in this life by following steadily the path of duty. Ed was a steadfast heart in his communities. He gave enduring love and brought the deepest joy. May the sympathy of those who care about you and the precious memories of Ed help to comfort you at this time. Respectfully, Charles Framularo

Ed was always a gentleman, very smart, with a great sense of humor. I enjoyed working with him on Monday mornings at Notre Dame Church. He was faster at doing math with a pencil than most people are with a calculator! Rest in Peace.

Mr. Kovac was the the assistant principal at Columbus School in Bridgeport when I came to work there in 1978. I also worked for him when he became principal at that same school a few years later. He was a tough principal, but I can say that with me, there was always mutual respect. My deepest condolences to his family. May he rest in eternal peace.
