Frank Pollien Obituary

POLLIEN Frank Pollien of Ellsworth, Maine, died Sunday, April 27, 2008. He was 85 years old, born in New York City in 1923. He was predeceased by his wife of 37 years, Jane (Barron) of Bridgeport. He is survived by his son, William and his wife, Simona of Roxbury, N.Y. and by his other son, Robert, his wife Amy and grandson, Jacob of Bar Harbor, Maine. He is also survived by his brother, Ernest of Bouqueron, Puerto Rico; his sister, Yvonne of Stueben, Maine; and brother, Richard of Niceville, Fla. He grew up in Yonkers, N.Y. where he attended public schools, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1941. He then attended New York University where he pursued a chemical engineering degree. However, he joined the Air Corps Reserve in 1942 and entered active duty as an Aviation Cadet in early 1943. He graduated as an Aerial Navigator and subsequently flew 50 combat missions in B-24 bombers as a member of the 461st Bomb Group of the 15th Air Force stationed in Italy. Following his tour of combat, he was assigned to the 4th Ferry Group where he was a navigator on airplanes being delivered to the Far East in preparation for an invasion of Japan. Upon discharge from the Air Corps, he completed his undergraduate studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, receiving a degree in chemical engineering in early 1948. Upon his graduation, he was hired by E I Du Pont at their Fairfield plant. He spent the next 27 years at that operation ending his tenure there as plant manager. In 1975, he was transferred to the Du Pont, Fort Madison, Iowa plant and ended his career as a manager at corporate headquarters in Wilmington, Del. in 1985. Moving to Ellsworth, Maine in 2003, he was active in "Faith in Action" and the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ellsworth. At his request, no memorial service will be held.
