Frederick Saviano Obituary

Saviano, Frederick L.
"On April 9, Reverend Frederick Lawrence Saviano was called home to the Lord after a lengthy illness. Father Fred was born on November 5, 1941 to John and Mildred (Romano) Saviano in Westport, CT, the youngest of five boys. Called into a life of servitude to the Lord at an early age, Father Fred credited his vocation to the Priesthood to his Mother's deep faith, as his Father passed away when he was only 3 years old. Fond of his duties as an Alter Server in Assumption Church since the age of 9, Father Fred often dreamed of being like the Priests of his Parish.
When he was in the eighth grade the Lord opened to Father Fred a path to missionary life and nurtured in him an affection for the foreign missions. It was this affection that led him to enter the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Sallette. He was ordained to the Priesthood in May of 1968. Father Fred went on to serve the missions in Argentina from 1969-1978 and then in the rural mission areas of Peru from 1978-93. In 1993, upon his return from the missions, he was named Parochial Assistant in the Parish of Our Lady of Montserrat in Stamford.
In 1995 he was installed as Pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Danbury. Once again in 2005, his devotion to the missions compelled him to return to Peru as a missionary in the Archdiocese of Arequipa. Undeterred by declining health, Father Fred worked tirelessly with the poor of that City. Upon his return to the Diocese of Bridgeport, Father Fred resided at Saint Francis of Assisi Parish in Weston, CT. Soon after, he was asked by Bishop Lori to head the Diocesan Office for the Propagation of the Faith, a job the Bishop felt would befit him particularly well given his multilingual skills and extensive experience in the missions. Well-known for his benevolence, wonderfully sharp sense of humor and a particular fondness for desserts, Father Fred, or Padre "Fico" as he was known to those closest to him, will be most remembered for his adoration and devotion to the Lord.
Father Fred was predeceased by his four brothers, Joseph J. Saviano, Sr., John J. Saviano, Jr., William H. Saviano, Sr. and Donald Saviano all of Westport. He is survived by his sisters-in-law, Hazel Saviano and Mary Saviano, several nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces and cousins along with many Godchildren and friends the World over."
The family will receive friends in Assumption Church 98 Riverside Ave. in Westport, CT on Friday April 15, 2016 from 4 to 7 PM a vigil Mass will follow in Assumption church immediately following the calling hours. Friends are invited to attend a Funeral on Saturday April 16, 2016 meeting directly at Assumption Church at 10:00AM for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in Assumption Cemetery Kings Highway in Westport, CT. Condolences for the Saviano family may be left on line at www.hardingfuneral.com. Contributions in memory of Rev. On behalf of the Filipino Amateur League in Connecticut, Inc. (FALConn), I would like to express our sincerest condolences to the family of Father Saviano. His demise is a great loss to his Church. During the Hurricane Haiyan which devastated the Philippines and left hundreds of thousands dead and homeless, Fr. Fred was one of those who immediately responded to help these poor victims. May God rest your soul in Eternal Peace and may your loved ones find comfort in Him.
