Gary Cavallaro Obituary

Cavallaro, Gary John
Gary John Cavallaro, 53, entered into eternal rest on Thursday evening, March 16, 2017, in the comfort of his home, with his wife by his side, after a valiant battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Gina Marie Halligan Cavallaro. Gary was born in Derby on April 23, 1963, son of Darlene Dimon Cavallaro of Seymour and the late Durando John Cavallaro. He was a graduate of Seymour High School and studied at Sacred Heart University. He had worked as a tool and die tradesman and foreman at Pop Fasteners in Shelton and later at Stevens Company in Thomaston, until his retirement. Gary had a passion for motorcycles since his early teens and rode as far West as the Dakota's and even built his motorcycles. Gary enjoyed the finest life had to offer and most often could be spotted enjoying the open roads on his Harley. He was a diehard Washington Redskin fan and there wasn't a team game he ever missed. He enjoyed hunting and all that went along with the sport. Gary's most profound interest was in his community serving as a thirty-two year member of Citizens Engine Company No. 2 in Seymour. Joining in 1985, he rose through the ranks of the fire company as Lieutenant and later Captain from 1991 to 1994. He became Assistant Chief and in 2001 was appointed Chief of the Seymour Fire Department. He returned to a leadership role in the fire company becoming the first president of Citizens Engine Co. in 2006. In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by sisters, Kathryn L. Hudak (Steve M. Hudak Jr.) of Shelton, Cheryl A. Davis of Oxford, nieces and nephews, Jaime Lynn Gervasio (Joseph), Jessica Marie Davis, Stephen Michael Hudak III, Jodi Ann Davis, Kailee Michelle Hudak and Paul Everett Davis Jr. He was predeceased by a brother in law, Paul E. Davis. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday March 22, 2017, from 3:00 to 7:00 pm in the chapel of the SPINELLI-RICCIUTI/BEDNAR-OSIECKI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia. On Thursday, his funeral will take place at 10:00 am (Please Meet Directly) at St. Mary's Church, 212 Elizabeth Street in Derby for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will immediately follow in Mt. St. Peter Cemetery in Derby. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Gary's memory to Citizens Engine Company No. 2, 26 DeForest St., Seymour, CT 06483, for future maintenance of the 1936 antique Seagrave fire engine. Gary my old friend may you Rest In Peace. It's been many years since we've been in contact but old friendships never end. We had shared so many wonderful memories way back to our high school years hanging out at the cottage, Burger King or Bradlees parking lot, Sunday movies, dancing and good laughs. But as life moved on so did we. It's hard to forget those who held special places in our hearts and you my friend held one in mine.

Gary and I grew up in the same neighborhood and I can remember all of the things we did as kids, playing in the stream at the end of the street, riding our bikes around and building snow forts from the piles of snow after our driveways were shoveled. I remember when Gary joined the firehouse and became a brother fireman. He spent numerous hours at the firehouse working on the 36 Seagrave, it was his passion. I am now saddened by his passing. I'm glad I got to see him this summer, although is was for a brief time. Rest In Peace my friend, my brother. Sending prayers to Gary's family as well as my brothers and sisters at Citizens Engine Co.
