George Grom Obituary

George W. Grom
George W. Grom passed away at the age of 93 after a wonderful life. He was the forever dance partner and beloved husband of Patricia A. Grom for 66 years. George was born in Bridgeport to George and Mary Grom on June 26, 1931. George graduated from Harding High School and served as a gunner on the battleship, U. S. S. New Jersey and played in the battleship's band during the Korean War. After the war, George attended Fairfield University, graduating with high honors in business administration. He married his high school sweetheart and pursued a career as an accountant, commuting to New York City each day. They settled in Stratford raising their five children on Vernon Street in Stratford. George and Pat organized holiday parties, decorating and cooking and opening their home to family and friends in this vibrant neighborhood. Family vacations included many camping trips all over New England. Their favorite being Riverdale Campground in Clinton, Connecticut. George had a passion for fishing which he instilled in his sons, taking them each year to an opening fishing day camping trip which would later include his grandsons. With George working as comptroller for Combustion Engineering, Pat and George moved to Eunice Parkway and hosted memorable family traditions including a big Thanksgiving Celebration, a Christmas Eve 7 course dinner, and of course an Easter Celebration with a tremendous Easter egg hunt. They were the most generous parents and grandparents. George and Pat had an amazing marriage, as they liked to say " we make our own fun". When retired, they would take the train into NYC and go to a show, dine in Little Italy and go to their favorite piano bar and dance the night away. George kept in good shape, swimming each day at the YMCA. He continued to practice the saxophone and joined the Connecticut Symphony Orchestra. His family will never forget the day he played with the orchestra at Carnegie Hall. George always enjoyed escaping into his basement and painting at his easel. His paintings will always hang in our homes as a reminder of our father, a man of many talents. George moved to Watermark Senior Living in Bridgeport where he enjoyed the social activities and his nightly Manhattan before dinner. His quiet, but loving and caring nature will be greatly missed by his children, Charlene McLaughlin and her husband, George, George and his wife, Mary Dean, Elliott and his wife Norma, Laura and Jeffrey. Pa holds a special place in the hearts of his grandchildren, Blake, George and Maddy McLaughlin, Eddie, Jake and Sami Grom, Elliott and Hayden Grom, Lia, Riley and Bella Hodson and Quinn, Ayden and Ava Grom. George also leaves his nephew, Tom Hanko and his wife Patrice and their three daughters and his sister, Rita Dulski. George was predeceased by his loving sister, Maureen Grom. The family appreciated and thanks the tremendous caretakers at Watermark. Funeral services are private and have been entrusted to the Adzima Funeral Home- Stratford. Sending condolences to the Grom family on the loss of Mr. Grom. I was another one of many neighborhood kids who knew Mr. Grom growing up. Both he and Mrs. Grom were always gregarious and welcoming to all. Hoping that all of the fond memories of Mr. Grom including many from the Vernon Street days will be as source of comfort to the Grom family.

My condolences to all of you for the loss of your dad. The Groms were "back yard" neighbors to my parents. I remember many chats over the fence with them when I visited. They were both lovely people.

Dear Charlene, George, Elliot, Laura, Jeffery and the entire Grom clan,
Our hearts are with you as you mourn the loss of you beloved father and celebrate his life well lived. Our Dads, George and Ron, met when they were about nine years old at Hall School on the Eastside of Bridgeport and from that day forward they were best friends. A faithful friendship that was cultivated through the decades as they married, raised families, and shared the joy of grandchildren. From time to time my dad would launch into retelling stories from their youth and he'd smile fondly, recalling their antics. ( I believe he censored a good bit!) From the start our families were connected because of their friendship. Your dad was special. George possessed a quick wit and a warm smile to match, a kind heart, and quiet wisdom. He had predictable mannerisms,I can see him standing ,shifting his weight, extending a leg, scratching his head, folding his arms, cupping his chin in his hand, as the Dads engaging in conversation. While they didn't get together often, our Dads possessed a loyal and a comfortable companionship, because your Dad was like that, kind, gentle, and easy going. In later years I'd ask your Dad,"Hey Mr. Grom, what are you up too," and he say 3 or 7 or 9 - whatever was the latest number of grandchildren. Then he smiled with pride. He had a quite kind of love. Then he'd share stories about the latest trips you guys send them on to the city and the fun they had dancing. Your folks truly did know how to have fun, I can see them dancing with huge smiles! Your Dad would share the latest camping and fishing adventures with the kids and grands. Your Dad was a treasure, and while he has passed, may you continue to grow in love and learn new ways to cherish him.
Peace, Meg Homza Langworthy
