John Goble Obituary

GOBLE John C. Goble, Ph.D. of Easton, died suddenly on November 7, 2009, cutting short a life lived to the fullest. Dr. Goble was President of Sectra North America, a medical imaging systems technology company in Shelton. He was considered to be a man of accomplishment, including as a pioneer in the use of visualization technology in surgery. The Easton resident was a scientist and inventor, as well as a seasoned pilot, woodworker and electronics expert. Born and raised in Pittsburg, Kansas, he was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Viet Nam conflict. His education included Penn State University, The Johns Hopkins University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute whereby he was awarded his Bachelor's, two Master's Degrees and his Doctorate. He had extensive background in medical computing with experience from the research, clinical and commercial perspectives. He provided physics support for the pioneering Position Emission Tomography program at the National Institutes of Health. He worked with the first generation of MR scanners at Albany Medical Center. After obtaining his doctorate, he taught graduates and undergraduates at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Later, he founded the Neurosurgical Visualization Laboratory at the University of Virginia and then became the Medical Imaging Program Manager for Hewlett-Pack-ard's workstation division based in Massachusetts. He went on to co-found Sectra North America in 1997 and served as its President ever since. He holds six patents for new developments relating to medical imaging and is the author of more than 20 refereed scientific publications. Dr. Goble was prede-ceased by his father, G. Corban Goble. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife Colleen, his mother, Mildred, brothers Jeff and Jim as well as several nephews, a niece, cousins and his beloved dog Bentley. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, November 21st at 2 PM at the First Presbyterian Church of Fairfield, 2475 Easton Turnpike, Fairfield, CT 06825. Military honors will be held in Fort Scott, Kansas at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests with gratitude, those wishing can make a memorial contribution to the 'John C. Goble, Ph.D. Memorial Fund' forwarded to the attention of Mr. Youssef Boutros, Peoples Bank, 1000 Bridgeport Avenue, Shelton, CT 06484 to establish a scholarship fund for students to pursue a career in medical imaging through Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
