RUTH JOHNSON

JOHNSON--Ruth Raup. A quiet trailblazer who attended thoughtfully to others, Ruth Johnson passed away at the age of 98, on November 4, 2025. Born Ruth Mitchell Raup on July 11, 1927, to Columbia Univ. professors Clara Eliot and Robert Bruce Raup Jr., she attended the Lincoln School and graduated from Briarcliff High School, Barnard College (B.A. '47), St. Hilda's College at Oxford as a Fulbright Scholar, and the Univ. of Minnesota (M.A. '52). She moved to Washington, D.C. and had a distinguished career in public health policy, retiring as Deputy Director of the Bureau of Health Professions. Ruth and her husband Myles M. Johnson enjoyed traveling and doing community service. She also played the violin and sang with a chamber choir. Predeceased by her husband and her siblings, Joan Rosenblatt, Bob Raup, and Charlotte Cremin, she is survived by her daughters, Kerry J. Gruber, Sara Raup Johnson and Elizabeth Wynne Johnson. A celebration of life will be held at Ingleside King Farm in Rockville, MD on January 25, 2026. Donations in Ruth's memory may be made to Barnard College or to the Levine School of Music.
