I first met John in 1980 at the Sealord Academy in Dammam, Saudi Arabia where we taught English to young Saudi Naval recruits. John would come to work wearing different socks inside his required hush puppies with food stains on his uniform shirt. He was a fantastic first baseman, a great teacher, and relished pushing the boundaries of authority and social conventions. We hit it off immediately. Over the course of several R and R's to Bangkok John introduced me to Thailand, teaching me some of the rudiments of the language and culture. When I returned to Thailand from Desert Shield, began teaching at ISB, and was joined by my two children we rented a little wooden house from John off Sukhumvit Soi 24. Throughout the 1990's we played golf together regularly and during school holidays John and I would pack up his seven and my two kids in his old Volkswagen van for adventures to remote islands in the Gulf of Thailand or the Andamen Sea. It was the greatest time of my life and I like to think that the same was true for John. We always kept up a lively correspondence after I returned to the US in 2002 and John stayed at our house on a couple of his visits to the US. I last saw John on our first return to Thailand in 2019. John was possibly the most unique character whom I have ever had the honor of calling a best friend. He would do anything in his power to help his friends out in a jam. Say no more...

John was a generous and mischievous spirit. We lived across the street from John and often played hot box in in his backyard. After many years of not seeing John, we reconnected in Thailand and he helped us navigate, golfing on one occasion when he he holed an eagle with a drive that bounced favorably off a rock on to the green. John remained an ardent Catholic throughout his life and was a devoted servant of the gospel to his last breath. He was also the best first baseman in the Fairfield Little League, scooping short hops with the assurance of a major leaguer.

At Holy Cross I had the good fortune to know John and appreciated his outspoken, direct, friendly and spiritual character. The angels surely sped him into Paradise.

I worked with John in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia when we were teaching English to naval recruits from 1981-83. He was the most lively instructor on the premises and always had something interesting to say, but not printable here. In 1991, I stayed in Bangkok for 5 months refreshing my Thai language skills from my own Peace Corps days during morning classes. In the afternoons I tutored wherever John sent me. Each time I met him, it was so obvious that he was proud of his children.

John was a good friend, a good man. He once wrote a lovely tribute to my mother, whom he met several times when traveling to the US to visit Julian at Purdue. Let me now, sadly, return that simple favor.
John was generous and kind, cranky and cantankerous, playful and political, spiritual and mischievous. All wrapped up in one big, barrel of a man. I will miss him.
My deepest sympathies to his lovely, far-flung family.
Sincerely,
Patrick Owens

Now I regret not replying to your last email, John, even though I may not have agreed with it. In any event, I did enjoy staying with you at our 50th Holy Cross Reunion and will always remember it positively.

John was a unique individual.
Fond memories of times spent together. A group of us went skiing at his parents ski house in Vermont one year. Wonderful time, first time I skied.
I know I met him in some overseas location once, I think it was while I was stationed in Saudi Arabia. Not sure why he was there.
Nine kids!!!
