John Russo Obituary

RUSSO John R. Russo M.D. died at his home in Huntington, on October 18, 2011. His devoted wife of 65 years Matilda C. Russo, his son John Marc Russo, Esq., his grandson Andrew J.D. Russo, and his caring aid Lucy Afonso were at his bedside. Born on March 30, 1917, in New York City, he was the fourth of Giovanni and Maria Grazia Russo's five children. His father was a real-estate developer in New York City. John graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School. He attended Johns Hopkins University where he became a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. He graduated from Columbia College of Columbia University with a B.A. in Anthropology in 1939 and entered medical school at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons receiving his M.D. in 1943. He interned at Long Island College Hospital and at Bellevue Hospital in New York. His entire class was mobilized for service in World War II. John served as a Captain in the US Army Medical Corps. Assigned to the ETO Blood Bank, his company participated in the Normandy invasion and the liberation of Paris. In 1946 he married his wife Matilda in Atlanta, GA and continued his training at Long Island College Hospital (Downstate Medical Center of the State University of New York), where he was chief resident in Pediatrics and at Syndenham Hospital in Baltimore. In 1949, he established his home and office in the north end of Bridgeport and practiced pediatrics there until his retirement two months before his 80th birthday. A Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics he was an attending physician at both St. Vincent's Medical Center and Bridgeport Hospital. At St. Vincent's he was chief of Pediatrics for more than a decade and served as President of the Hospital Staff. John was active in the Fairfield County Medical Association and in the medical education of future physicians, helping establish the Yale University Pediatric Residency Program at Bridgeport Hospital. John cared for his patients and their families at his home and office on Main Street for his entire career. During the latter years of practice, his wife Matilda, a nurse, worked by his side. John brought his gentle and caring love of his family with him when he stepped from his home into his office. The same devotion as father, grandfather, and uncle was showered on the many wonderful residents of Bridgeport and surrounding towns who chose him as their physician. With the same joy and spirit for his work and devotion to his patients, John loved the company of his many nieces and nephews, as well as their spouses and friends, as he did for his children and grandson. While growing up John and his family spent many happy days at their summer home in Rockaway Beach. At Rockaway John first learned to swim, to surf, and to love everything about the sea. This translated into many happy moments for his children, grandson, nieces and nephews as John shared his enthusiasm for sailing, skiing, and intellectual pursuits, teaching them about being positive and considerate to others, often repeating his favorite quote from Dwight D. Eisenhower: "Nothing is achieved without optimism." A member of the Black Rock Yacht Club for more than 50 years, and former Fleet Surgeon at the Fayerweather Yacht Club, John loved to sail on Long Island Sound. Predeceased by his sister Rose and her husband C. Paul Russo M.D. and his sister Adelaide and her husband Alexius Rachun M.D., he is survived, in addition to his beloved wife, Matilda, by his daughter Adelaide M. Russo of Baton Rouge, LA, his son John Marc Russo of Avon, and his grandson Andrew J.D. Russo of Avon, his beloved younger brother Francis R. Russo M.D. and sister-in-law Nancy of Janesville, WI and Pinehurst, NC, sister-in-law Cecelia DeAlto of Boston, MA, sister-in-law, Catherine Ammirati of Long Island, NY and many nieces, nephews, their spouses, and children. Friends and family may call on Monday, October 24, 2011 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Redgate - Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull. On Tuesday October 25, 2011, at 10 a.m., Father Michael K. Jones and Father Michael F. Dogali will co-celebrate John's life at Saint Lawrence Church, 505 Shelton Avenue, Huntington. Interment at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Fairfield will be private. The Russo Family would like to express their deep gratitude to the Afonso Family and to Deborah Sims, R.N. of the Hospice Service of the Connecticut Visiting Nurse Association for the excellent care they gave John during his illness. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Dr. Russo's memory to the Department of Pediatrics at St. Vincent's Medical Center Foundation, 2800 Main Street, Bridgeport, CT 06606, to the Pediatrics Residency Program at Bridgeport Hospital, P.O. Thought of my old pediatrician who came to see me in my hospital room after his rounds because I had an emergency appendectomy at age 19 ...during my childhood inoculations, he pretended his needles were made of rubber and made a show of getting down on a knee chasing the "rubber needle" he just gave me to distract me from crying..God Bless You Dr.Russo

One of the best Pediatricians in the world! He was by far superb with my children. My children are grown now, and I would have never made it without these excellent doctors caring for them! May he be in heaven rejoicing!! Rest in Peace Dr Russo

Dear Mrs. Russo and Family, I am so sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of having Dr. Russo as my pediatrician. My weekly visits to your office for allergy shots were not the first thing on my list to do but both you and Dr. Russo made me feel like one of your family. When I had my son 22 years ago there was no question who I was going to bring him to and 20 months later my daughter was also welcomed with the warm smile and gentleness both of you gave. When we would see you at the mall you would stop and talk to us and always made us feel like we were one of your own children. Dr. Russo will be missed by all who knew him.

Dear Mrs. Russo and Family, Please accept my sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy. Although I don't remember it myself, my mom tells me that when I was 9 months old, she brought me to visit the Doctor due to what seemed to be sever ear pain. Dr. Russo, upon seeing the severity of the situation, immediately drove my mom and I to St. Vincent's for emergency surgery. May the Lord bless him for his kindness and caring and may He bless you and comfort you during this most difficult time.
Sincerely,
Phil Chiodi

Mrs. Russo and Family: I am so sad to hear about Dr. Russo's passing. He took care of me many times during my asthma attacks, making numerous house calls, saving my life more than once.He was my doctor from 1952 until I was 18. I then returned as a mother and he took care of all my four sons(35-26) with the same love and care which he gave to me. He was a perfect example of what a Doctor should be. I am sure every one of his patients would say the same. You also are to be thanked for all of your kindnesses, working by his side for many years. This is certainly an end of an era where doctors were always there for their patients. He will truly be missed, certainly by me and my sons.

My daughter and son as well as myself have you both in our thoughts always and forever. The both of you are precious Human Beings.

Dearest Dr Russo,
You are the BEST and I am forever grateful for being in your care. As the story goes, very early in your practice (1952/53) I was less than one year old and was very, very sick.

You tried an experimental treatment, staying with me in the hospital over night; moreover than the drugs, I feel it was your care. You saved my life.

I, along with all of your other patients are very fortunate that you made Bridgeport your home.
Bless you Dr. Russo, Bless you.

Dear Ms. Russo. You probably don't remember me, "Cookie Milewski" then, but my daughter now 40 yrs old was one of your patients. I remember doctors bedside manner well, he was so kind. I fondly remember the time you personally cross-cut all of those bottle nipples for Lora's bottle. Oh the frustration I felt, and, how we all laughed about it later. YOU WERE QUITE THE TEAM. Please accept my heartfelt condolenses, and may he rest in peace.

October 24, 2011

Dear Mrs. Russo & Family:
My condolences to you and yours.
My two daughters Linda (33) and Laura (26) Geaney were patients until he retired.
What can one say about Dr. Russo that
hasn't already been said. He was the
best baby doctor Bridgeport had as shown by the number of patients he had.
The wait was long but the care was the best. I remember his wife Mattie always by his side. Dr. Russo was one of a kind (physician).
Rest in peace.

Mrs Russo and Family, My condolences on the loss of a great doctor, and a great man. I was a patient of Dr. Russo's and whenever I came to visit him as a child, I would tell him I wanted to grow up and be a doctor, just like him. He would encourage me to do it, and would never discourage me. I even told him one day, I wanted to come back and train with him! Anyways, I didnt go to medical school, but I did become a PA (Physician Assistant) and to this day, still remember some of my visits with him. I strive to be the provider he was, kind and gentle, and treat everyone as an equal. He will be sorely missed!

Not to repeat what several of the posts have already said but... The world has lost a great Doctor as well as a great person. Dr Russo was my doctor as well as my son's Dr. 26 years later.. He was a great friend and sailing companion of my father-in-law Frank Intelisano. Frank used to tell me of the times they sailed on Dr Eckels boat. Rest in peace Dr Russo.

Dear Mrs. Russo...Dr. John was an amazing pediatrician, and I can still remember visits with our son (Michael, Age 41) and daughter (Andrea, Age 37). You told me that Andrea's lips were like rosebuds...I will never forget that. It was always comforting to know that if we really need Dr's help, he would call back if we called the service a second time...He was so special and none of us will ever forget him..(they don't make 'em like they used to). Regards, and with all our sympathies, Michele and Mike Mercurio.

R.I.P Dr. Russo. You were the best Pediatrician around. You were gentile and caring and treated each patient as if they were your own child or grandchild. You will be missed but you will remain forever in my heart. The world has lost the most amazing husband, father, grandfather and doctor but heaven has gained another Angel.
