John T. Velky, Jr.
John Chief T. Velky, Jr., age 91 of Stratford, beloved husband to Ann M. (Kosc) Velky of 65 years, passed away on Wednesday, February 9, 2022 in Bridgeport Hospital.
John was born in Bridgeport to the late John A. and Margaret (Liska) Velky on March 17,1930. A graduate of Bullard Havens Trade School and a U.S. Navy veteran during the Korean Conflict, his time in the Navy brought him to San Diego, Hawaii and Japan. He worked as a pattern maker and then as a supervisor for the City of Bridgeport Water Treatment Facility, retiring in 1995.
John met Ann at the White Eagle Dance Hall; he enjoyed dancing his entire life especially to a good polka. He enjoyed travel with family that included Czechoslovakia, cruises and Dallas. His favorite was visiting Florida in January! He also enjoyed car shows, air shows and UConn basketball, especially the ladies. He loved to tinker; he called it Yankee Ingenuity, He had an amazing "green thumb" and also loved all animals… especially dogs. He enjoyed a party; having his birthday on St. Patrick's Day was always special. Most special were always the holiday celebrations that involve tradition.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, John Velky and his wife, Susan, of Milford, Diane Velky (Stratford), Joseph Velky and his wife, Debbie, of Stratford, James Velky and his wife, Joyce of Yoba Linda, CA; his grandchildren - Jena Iannucci, Larry Iannucci and his wife Michelle, Jeffry Velky and his fiancee MyChi Hoang, Daniel Velky, Andrew Velky, Alyssa Monroe and her husband Joel. Great-grandchildren - Addie (8), Luke (6), Piper(4), Levi (2) Monroe and Vinny (4) and Gianna (2) Iannucci.
John was predeceased by his brothers Edward and Arthur.
Family would like to extend thanks to those at Bridgeport Hospital who took excellent care of John and enormous gratitude goes to our cousin, Dr. Kris Sikorski whose kindness, care, compassion was beyond compare over the last few years. Also, a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Ed Tuohy and John's caring home health aide Maxine Carless.
Friends are invited to attend the funeral on Monday, February 14, 2022 at 10 a.m. at the Pistey Funeral Home, 2155 Main Street, Stratford, and at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace, 497 Second Hill Lane, Stratford for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment with military honors will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Stratford. Friends may call on Sunday from 12-3 p.m at the Pistey Funeral Home. Masks are required.
