Joseph Gerics Obituary

GERICS Joseph G. Gerics, age 90 of Trumbull, the beloved husband of Mary Spodnik Gerics, peacefully entered into rest Monday, April 13, 2009 at St. Vincent's Medical Center surrounded by family members. Born in Bridgeport, January 9, 1919, his parents, Franc and Magda Filbar Gerics, returned to Yugoslavia with him when he was two. He returned to the United States at the age of eighteen, and served in the U.S. Army in campaigns in England, Italy and Africa during World War II for 40 months. He then met Mary, the love of his life, and together raised a family of six. He worked at Acme United for 47 years, retiring as the superintendent of the cast iron division in 1986. Joe was a member of St. Joseph Society Branch 19 FCSU and Acme's Quarter Century Club. He loved gardening, taking great pride in his park-like grounds and growing the first tomato each year. "Dedek" also loved to play cards, particularly pinochle with his children and grandchildren. But most of all, he loved spending time with his family and enjoyed close relationships with all of them. Joe is survived by his wife, Mary of 59 years; six children, Joseph and wife, Susan of Manhattan, Gregory and wife, Kathryn of Trumbull, Robert of Stratford, Mary Anne Levin and husband, Gary of Tampa, Fla., David of Newtown, and Joanne Lorys and husband, Robert of Roswell, Ga.; brother, Franc of Slovenia; 12 grandchildren, Joseph A. Gerics, Kristina Gerics, David and Matthew Gerics, Nicole, Michael and Richard Levin, Tara, Cindy, Meredith, Renee and Robert Lorys; and three great-grandchildren. Our family is most grateful to Drs. Cooper, Dhanjal, Muldoon and Weed and nurses, Stephanie and Shelly for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings made be made to the Sisters of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Villa Sacred Heart, Danville, Pennsylvania 17821-1698. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 17, 2009 at 9 a.m. in the Galello-Luchansky Funeral Home, 2220 Main Street, Stratford and at 10 a.m. in St. Catherine of Siena Church, Shelton Road, Trumbull where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery Trumbull. Friends may call in the Galello-Luchansky Funeral Home Thursday (Today) from 4 to 8 p.m. To light a virtual candle, please visit us at www.galellofuneralhome.com.

Dear Gerics Family,
I was saddened to learn about the death of Mr. Gerics. His son Joe was one of my teachers at Fairfield Prep, and Joe and I were friends during our ministries at St. Augustine's. Joe's good nature and warmth obviously emanated from his dad. Know you'll be in my prayers.

Dear Mrs. Gerics, Mary Anne and Family: I am sorry to learn of Mr. Geric's passing. He was a fine man and always made me feel very welcome in his home. He was a wonderful role model for me....he raised not only beautiful tomatoes, but children as well. A finer family I have yet to meet. Take care of yourselves.
