Julia Foster Obituary
Foster, Julia
On October 5th Julia Randolph Foster was received into the embrace of heaven.
Julie was born in Rahway, New Jersey on December 16, 1931 to Robert and Frances Randolph. She grew up in Westfield NJ, and attended Wells College in Aurora NY. As a Spanish Language major, she wanted to improve her fluency by studying in Mexico. Wells didn't have a Junior Year Abroad program at the time. Not to be deterred, Julie joined a group from Smith College and became the first student at Wells to study abroad. She maintained friendships with classmates of that year for the rest of her life.
Married to Walter Jacob Foster of Brooklyn, NY from 1955 to 1994, she reared three daughters as his career took them from Tampa FL, to Syocett NY, to LaGrange IL (twice), to Franklin Lakes NJ, and Darien CT. Julie was a devoted mother, helping at her children's schools, driving innumerable carpools, serving as Bluebird leader and "Art Lady", and making the most amazing costumes including a cow, pumpkin, and – her personal triumph – a kangaroo.
Her personal hobbies included knitting, painting, reading and gardening. Julia was a member of AAUW's book group during her years in Illinois. She was also an active member of the La Grange Garden Club and delighted in discovering unusual varieties of her favorite plants. She continued her love of gardens and flowers with the Rowayton Gardeners in Connecticut. As a member of the Flower Team at Noroton Presbyterian Church, she helped arrange the flowers that graced the sanctuary. She was quite athletic and played golf, paddle tennis, and competitive tennis.
Julie took great comfort in the community of Noroton Presbyterian Church. In addition to the Flower Team, her service included active membership in the Prayer Group, election as a Church Deacon, and extensive training to become a Stephen Minister. Bible Study was another activity to which Julie devoted many hours, and she attended conferences for her favorite spiritual leaders all over New England.
Julia was beloved by many and her bright smile will be sorely missed. She is survived by her step-sister, Susan (Shy) Bourgeois; her daughters, Sarah Foster Erickson, Marguerite Bonney Foster, Susan Kelly Foster; and grandsons Nicholas and Andrew Erickson.
A memorial service will be held Friday November 13 at 12:30 pm in the Chapel of Noroton Presbyterian Church located at 2011 Post Rd, Darien, CT 06820. A reception will follow the service.
