Laura Lund Obituary

LUND Mrs. Laura N. Lund, age 85, beloved wife of Roy W. Lund of Milford, passed away on Sunday, July 10, 2005 at Milford Hospital. Daughter of the late Lester and Norma Young Butcher, she was born on August 19, 1919 in Beacon Falls, and was a longtime resident of Milford. Mrs. Lund was employed by the Board of Education for the City of Milford for 25 years until retiring in 1975. She taught Dance and Physical Education and had introduced Dance Clubs and Leaders Clubs at both Jonathan Law High School and the former Milford High School. Mrs. Lund graduated from Naugatuck High School in 1937. She earned her bachelor of Science degree from Arnold College in 1941 and had attended New York University and Bridgeport University. Mrs. Lund was active in all athletics in high school and college. She received numerous awards for her outstanding achievements. Mrs. Lund was a recipient of the Outstanding Service Award from the Milford Public School System; the Presidential Award from former President George Bush for her contributions in the field of aerobics; the Ten-Year Alumni Award from Arnold College; and the Ten-Year Alumni Award from the University of Bridgeport for her outstanding contributions in the field of physical education. She was inducted into the Bridgeport University Hall of Fame in 1983. Mrs. Lund conducted the Senior Citizens Olympics at the University Bridgeport for numerous years. She was a Charter Member of the Milford Women's Club and the Milford Fine Arts Council and was a recipient of the Certificate of Merit from the Milford Fine Arts Council. She was a lifetime member of the Connecticut Teacher's Association. Mrs. Lund was an active member of the Milford Senior Citizens where she taught classes of dance for a number of years and had directed six shows that played to full houses. She was a recipient of the Outstanding Service Award for her contributions to the Milford elderly. Mrs. Lund taught classes in dance at the Lee Lund Dance Studio of Milford. She was a former member of the Wepawaug and Mill River Country Clubs for many years. Mrs. Lund won the Golf Club Championship at the Wepawaug Country Club in 1961 and the City of Milford Women's Championship in 1963. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Lee G. Lund, Denise L. Lund Kirkpatrick, both of Milford; three grandchildren, Ambere Rogers, Derrick and Ian Kirkpatrick; and four nieces and two nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, William and Frank Butcher. A Service will be held on Thursday, July 14 at 10 a.m. in First United Church of Christ Congregational, 34 West Main Street, Milford. Interment in King's Highway Cemetery, Milford. Friends may call on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Cody White Funeral Home, 107 Broad Street on the Green, Milford. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 2911 Dixwell Avenue, Suite 104, Hamden, CT 06518.
