Lucie McKinney Obituary
Lucie Cunningham McKinney, wife of the late Congressman Stewart Brett McKinney, daughter of Briggs and Lucie Cunningham, granddaughter of Fredrick T Bedford, died peacefully in her sleep after a struggle with cancer May 10 2014. While all who knew her saw her as a force of nature she will be remembered most for her generous service to others. Lucie was the spearhead for the Stewart B. McKinney foundation, fighting for the homeless and people with HIV/ AIDS. She and her family, the Bedford's, gave extensively to the Westport-Weston Family YMCA, the town of Westport, and many other great causes. Lucie was a lover of cars, nature, animals and politics and a passionate spokeswoman for many, a trait she passed on to all who knew her. Lucie is survived by her children, Stewart B. McKinney Jr., Lucie B. McKinney, Jean C. McKinney, Elizabeth (Libby) M. Tritschler, John P. McKinney, 12 grandchildren, Stewart III, Shannon, Michael, Lucie (Libby), Steven, Jaime, Fred IV, Brett, Alison (Ali) Matthew, Graysen, Kate, her Aunt Ruth Bedford, brother Briggs Cunningham, sister Cythleen Maddock, dear friend Gary Smith and last but not least, her best friends Tiffany and Briggs. In the words of her friend Tonya Hughes, " Lucie will be sorely missed by her family, friends and the community- we are all better for having had her in our lives " A service celebrating Lucie's life will be held Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, 4670 Congress Street, Fairfield. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers please donate to one of her favorite causes: Stewart B. McKinney Foundation, Westport-Weston Family YMCA of John McKinney for Governor. What a joy she was and I shall always remember the fun we had. It was more than politics it was warm friendships. Lucy was always there and very supportive even when we all were at her home. Those were golden days and I shall miss her. With sympathy to all f the kids and their family.

Even though I worked at FCHC for years, I just really met Lucie in the past few years when she contacted me to find her aunt Ruth Bedford a rescue dog. I found Ms. Bedford a dog and then often visited her and became friendly with Lucie. In the short time I had known her, when I had a glitch getting my dog daycare business going, Mrs. McKinney stepped right in to help me out. She was a great lady. RIP
