Mark Scott Obituary

Mark Gifford Scott
Mark Gifford Scott passed away peacefully at home in Ajijic, Mexico with his beloved wife by his side.
Mark was born in Bridgeport, CT, the son of Mildred Scott and Robert W. Scott. He was raised on Elm St in Stratford and graduated from Stratford High School in 1965. He graduated from the university of Bridgeport after taking a detour after his freshman year to volunteer for the Army, which was drafting men to deploy to Vietnam. Shipped off to Fort Benning, GA, (now Fort Moore), there he met his future wife of 55 years Bernice Seigal Scott. Against the advice of almost everyone, they quickly married before both were deployed. Together. Per the orders of President Lyndon B Johnson, as the story goes. A Vietnam love story for the ages.
Mark returned from Vietnam a combat wounded veteran awarded the Purple Heart. During his time in the Army, he also earned a Bronze Star as well as his Combat Infantry Badge.
He then went to work for the family business Scott Insurance on Main Street in Stratford from 1971-2011, where he was President and partners with his brother-in-law Robert Copley. During his time there he was President of the Bridgeport Insurance Agents in 1985-1986, President of the Stratford Rotary from 1977-1978. He was also Honorary Grand Marshall of the Stratford Memorial Day Parade in 1983.
He loved taking his family on ski trips to VT and out west, as well as camping on Lake Lillinonah. He was a longtime member of the Stratford Athletic Club where he met many friends, playing racquetball, exercise and running 5ks with some of the fellas there. The entire family and friends enjoyed the Condo at Top of the World Golf Resort in Lake George from 1988 until the present.
In retirement he enjoyed cruises and traveling the globe with wife and friends. As well as Boys trips with his sons to Jackson Hole, Iceland and lastly Nicaragua this past January.
He is survived by his wife Bernice Scott, sons Barton Scott, daughter-in-law Rose Scott, their children Mark A and Natalie Scott. Son Andrew Scott, daughter-in-law Angela Scott, and their daughters Alex and Joni Scott. His sister Susan Scott Copley and her husband and Marks former partner, Robert Copley, as well as many other extended family members.
A celebration of his life shall occur in the near future.

To Bernice and sons,
My mother and I are saddened to learn of Mark's passing.
We met Mark and Bernice in an unusual way.
A few years back, when our long-time insurance agent retired, he referred us to The Scott Agency, in Stratford, CT.
Not long after, while on one of our regular trips to Lake George, NY, we were introduced to "the other Scott's."
It was at that time we learned that our house in CT. is insured by Mark's insurance company.
From that point on, whenever we ran into Mark, we were greeted with a giant smile and a great story from his many trips.
Our sincere condolences to Mark's family.
You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Mark and I were in the same Army Infantry OCS class, graduating as second lieutenants on 5 Feb 68. Mark was a true patriot, a warrior, and a good friend. We enjoyed spending time with Mark and Bernice at several OCS reunions throughout the years. Mark will be sorely missed. May God provide blessings and solace to Bernice and the Scott family.

Mark was a real true friend and when Mark entered a room everyone was glad to see him.
Mark would step up to the plate for his friends without hesitation.
Mark and Bernice's love story is such a beautiful combination of love and war it's one for the record books.
Mark is a decorated veteran of the Vietnam war.
After his retirement he and Bernice traveled the world as well as enjoying their homes in Lake George, N. Y. and
Mexico.
Mark loved his family so much he was a fine example for others to follow.
May God watch over you. Rest in eternal Peace my dear friend.

When I was in HS I used to babysit Mark & Bernice´s children. I got the job because Bernice was a nursing instructor where my sister was a student. I often thought of all of you & especially the boys that I babysat. It looks as if all of you enjoyed a full life together with awesome family memories. So sorry to read of Mark´s passing, my sincere condolences to all of your family. Pat (Kiernan) Macuch.

It is with deep sympathy that my wonderful friend from Lake George has passed in the hands of the LORD. I will always remember the wonderful times that we shared together at their beautiful home over looking the lake and especially this past summer when I would pick him up to see Bernice in the hospital. My heart is so sadden, as I'm sure as other friends and family are as well, to not be able to see his smiling face and realize that we were so blessed to have been able to know MARK !! My our LORD great him with open arms.
