Mary Martha Sherts
Mary Martha Suckling Sherts, 95, of Fairfield, Connecticut, died peacefully, Tuesday, April 1st, 2025.
She was born December 29th, 1929, in Sewickley, PA, the daughter of the late Raymond Charles Suckling and Martha Katherine Schubart Suckling. She was raised in Coraopolis Heights, PA, then lived in Boston, MA. and Scottsdale, AZ, before settling in West Hartford, CT, in 1962. In 1973, the family moved to Fairfield, CT and then to Southport, CT.
Mary Martha attended Winchester Thurston School and Connecticut College for Women, and had jobs in tax preparation and in market research, while raising her family of four.
She is survived by her four children: Katherine Nancy Sherts Civitillo of West Hartford, CT, William Miles Sherts Jr. of Panton, VT, Charles Raymond Sherts of Westport, CT and Amy Bucher Sherts of San Rafael, CA. She also leaves five grandchildren, Whitney Barrett Civitillo Grimes (Scott) of Darien, CT, Martha Lee Civitillo Burnham (David) of New Canaan, CT, William Joseph Civitillo Jr. (Sarah) of Jersey City, NJ, Sarah Martha Sherts of San Francisco, CA and William Hervey Sherts of Westport, CT, and five great-grandchildren, Hunter, Anne, Elizabeth, Kate and Scottie. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, William Miles Sherts Sr., and also her brother, Raymond Schubart Suckling of Sewickley, PA.
She was a member of the Fairfield Beach Club of Fairfield, CT, Pequot Yacht Club of Southport, CT and Harvard Club of New York City. She loved doing volunteer work, including the Junior League, the Fairfield, CT Historical Society, the United Visiting Nurse Association, the Fairfield, CT Christmas Tree Festival, being involved in her church, playing bridge and mahjong, and joining book clubs and other interesting groups. Her passion was world travel as well as being with family.
Mary Martha is known among family and friends as taking an interest in every person and being a good listener and was loved by all.
A memorial service celebrating Mary Martha's life will be held on Sunday, June 1st, 2025, at 3:00 pm at Southport Congregational Church in Southport, CT. The burial will be on Monday June 2nd, at 10:00 am at Oak Lawn Cemetery, Fairfield, CT.
The family would like to thank the kind and caring staff at Southport Congregational Church and Sturges Ridge of Fairfield Assisted Living Community.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Southport Congregational Church in Southport, CT or The Fairfield Historical Society or the Connecticut College, New London, CT.
