Max Zuckerman Obituary

ZUCKERMAN Max Zuckerman died unexpectedly on Thursday, September 25, 2003, on his 98th birthday. He was a resident of the Jewish Home for the Elderly in Fairfield since June. He was born in Kolbuszowa, Poland, to Yitzchak and Regina (Mandel) Zuckerman. He immigrated to America in 1926 with his parents, brothers and sister to make a better life in the Land of Opportunity. He settled in New York City, where he successfully entered the butter and egg business. He was able to lend his future father-in-law money to bring Max's late wife, Pearl, and her brothers to the United States. Before the start of World War II, Max sponsored many family members so they could leave Europe and not face annihilation during the Holocaust. They settled in Bridgeport in 1937, and it was to be their home for the next 45 years while they raised a family. Max owned two liquor stores in Bridgeport and Stratford. He retired to West Palm Beach, Fla., in 1972. While in Bridgeport, he was an active member of Congregation Bikur Cholim, where he served as financial secretary. He was an avid swimmer at the Jewish Community Center, a life member of B'nai Brith and was a fund raiser for the United Jewish Council. He was also an active member of Congregation Aitz Chaim in West Palm Beach. Mr. Zuckerman is survived by his three sons and their wives, Joseph and Theda Zuckerman of New York City, Dr. Howard and Andrea Zuckerman of Fairfield, and Wallace and Deborah Zuckerman of Trumbull; his grandchildren, Bart and Josie Zuckerman, Julie Zuckerman and Joshua Kulp, Karen and John Wilcock, Brian and Deena Zuckerman, Louis and Claudia Zuckerman, Rebecca and Michael Lieber, Aliza and Michael Cooperman, Michelle Zuckerman and Evan Kropp, Tammy Zuckerman, Beth Zuckerman and Luis Zuckerman; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Philip, Victor and David; his sister, Chana; and a grandson, Lawrence Zuckerman. Services will take place on Friday (TODAY) at 11 a.m. from the Abraham L. Green and Son Funeral Home, 88 Beach Road, Fairfield, with interment following at Bikur Cholim Cemetery on Reid Street. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jewish Home for the Elderly, 175 Jefferson Street, Fairfield, CT 06825, or the charity of one's choice. There will not be a period of Shiva because of the onset of the Jewish New Year.
