Olga Guttmann Obituary

GUTTMANN Olga Guttmann, age 89, a resident of Spring Meadows, Trumbull and previously of Fairfield, passed away gently surrounded by her loving family on Monday night, December 8, 2008. Olga was born on November 16, 1919 in Munkacs, Czechoslovakia, the eldest of three children to Zvi and Chana Hirsch. She was pre-deceased by her husband of 60 years, Artur and brother, Alex Hirsch of London, England. Children and their spouses are Hanna and Jeff Skovronsky of Vienna, Va., Ahuva and Moshe Munzer of Monroe and Edward and Susan Guttmann of Monroe. Having survived the horrors of the Auschwitz concentration death camp, Olga met her husband as she was searching for any surviving members of her family, married after a couple weeks of courtship, they set up residence in Chomutov, Czechoslovakia, where they started a family and a thriving grocery store. In 1948, they emigrated to Israel, where they joined a newly formed moshav, Kerem Maharal and farmed their allocated land. In 1959, the then family of five moved to America and established residence in Norwalk, Bridgeport and then Fairfield. They became part and then sole owners of the Fairfield Diner and retired upon selling it in 1979. Enjoying the retirement years with a growing family, they spent their winters in Florida, where they were active members of the community. Olga was very pleasant and loving, with kind words for all and always ready to play cards and board games. She was a wonderful cook and baker, especially her Hungarian deserts, Makosh (poppy seed) and Deosh (walnut) rolls. Family was most important to her and she will be missed by them and the many friends made at Spring Meadows. Special thanks to all her caring friends. Loved and cherished by her grandchildren and their spouses, Gail and Andrew Goldstein, Daniel and Mari Skovronsky, Ronit and Jared Feldman, Alon and Rachel Munzer, Deborah and Tim Holcomb, Oren Guttmann and Jared Guttmann; great-grandchildren calling her GG are Lena, Mimi and Julia Goldstein, Gabriela and Clara Skovronsky, Olivia, Nina and Asher Feldman. Siblings and in-laws include, Mike and Olga Hirsch, Gerta Hirsch, Betty Fried, Zoltan and Leah Guttmann and Tibor and Anne Guttmann. A great many family members also share in our grief.
