Pedro Enrique Wasmer died at home, surrounded by the love of his three children, on July 6, 2025.
Pedro, a former resident of Fairfield, CT, was born Aug. 10, 1940, in Santiago de Cuba to María Josefa Odio Buch and Pedro Enrique Wasmer Arnaz. His father died when he was two months old. In 1951 his mother married Dr. Vincent H. Roca, and they relocated to Baltimore where his sister, Josephine Maria Roca, was born.
Though he did not speak English when he arrived in the U.S., Pedro graduated head of his class from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1958 and in 1962 earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Maryland, where he was president of both his class and the Student Government Association. He also completed a Master's program in Latin American studies at American University in 1964.
Pedro married Ann "Gussie" Gustafson on Jan. 29, 1965. In 1970 they moved with their three children, Peter, Jennifer and M. Conrad, to Fairfield. They had a summer house in Chatham, MA, and relocated to Naples, FL, in 2012.
A well-respected leader in the equipment leasing industry, he founded Somerset Investment Services in 1980 and, in 1996, Somerset Capital Group, Ltd., which was sold in 2007. His companies earned industry recognition and were ranked among top Hispanic-owned firms in the U.S.
Pedro was a Renaissance man who loved culture, art, poetry, music and travel. He maintained strong connections to the University of Maryland, endowing a professorship and serving on various boards.
Pedro is preceded in death by his wife, Gussie, and his granddaughter, Sadie Jane. He is survived by his three children, their spouses, five grandchildren and his sister.
A Celebration of Pedro's Life will be held on Sat., Aug. 9, 2025, at 11 a.m., at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Naples.
