Raymond Baldwin Obituary

BALDWIN Raymond Earl Baldwin Jr., passed away on Monday, March 6, 2006 at Bridgeport Manor. Born in New Haven on August 10, 1927, Ray was the loving husband of Marion "Mimi" Swearingen Baldwin. Son of the late, former Governor of Connecticut, U.S. Senator and Chief Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court, Raymond E. Baldwin and Edith Lindholm Baldwin. He grew up in Stratford and graduated from The Kent School in 1945. He received his bachelor's degree from Williams College in 1950. Ray was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II, and the Korean War on the aircraft carrier, USS Philippine Sea as an Air Intelligence Officer. After his military service in Korea, he attended Yale Law School and received his Jurist Doctorate in 1956. Ray and Mimi would have been married 50 years in September, and together they raised their five children in Fairfield. A member of the Bridgeport, Connecticut and American Bar Associations for nearly fifty years, he practiced law with Pullman and Comley in Bridgeport from 1956 to 2002. He was a former member of The University Club of Bridgeport, the Fairfield Rotary Club, the Fairfield Beach Club, and was a member, and past president, of The Brooklawn Country Club. Ray was also a member, and former president, of the Connecticut Seniors Golf Association and a former member of the U.S. Seniors Golf Association. Ray was an original member of St.Timothy's Episcopal Church where he served on the Vestry and as Junior Warden. He was predeceased by an infant son, John Andrew; and his two brothers, Lucian Earl and Tyler Baldwin. Ray treasured his family: oldest son, Raymond E. Baldwin III and his wife, Susan, of Milford, son Peter and his wife, Christine, of Exeter, N.H., son, James and his wife, Louise, of Fairfield, only daughter, Kathryn and her husband, Cary McConnell, of Reading, Mass., and youngest son, William and his wife, Sedef, who reside in New York City. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his eleven grandchildren, who will forever lovingly remember their "Grumps": Ali, Cory, Calvin, Alex, Nick, Grace, Andrew, James, Charlie, Estelle and Annie. Ray leaves behind two sisters-in-law, Frances "Frannie" Baldwin of Fairfield, and Elizabeth Baldwin of Avon; his cousin, Lyman Hoops and his wife, Lois, of Old Lyme; and several nieces and nephews. Ray leaves a legacy of wonderful memories for all who knew him. We smile as we recall his humor, his wit, improvisations on and off the dance floor and his never-ending love for family and friends - a life woven with continuous threads of honor, grace and humor. Following a private interment in the Memorial Garden, a memorial service will take place on Saturday, March 25, at 10 a.m. at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made either to St. Timothy's Episcopal Church 4670 Congress Street, Fairfield, CT 06824 or The Brooklawn Caddie Scholarship Fund, c/o The Brooklawn Country Club, 500 Algonquin Rd, Fairfield, CT 06825. Arrangements by the Redgate - Hennessy Funeral Home, Trumbull.

Dear Mrs Baldwin and family...I can't tell you how often memories of Mr. Balwin and the rest of the family enter my mind. From the secret passage way in the old house in Greenfield Hill to all the swim meets with the Fairfield and Westport Y's ( Mike Krine ) I think the road trips that accompanied them were the best part ( Jim Dandy's at Friendly's with the gang). I am truely sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. If there is anything I can do please don't hesitate.

Sincerely,

Bill Naff

Dear Mimi:

I just heard about your recent loss of Ray. When we met in January, we talked about his amazing courage in facing a most difficult journey in the last few years. How fortunate he was to have the loving care and support you and the children provided.

May all the wonderful memories you and your family have, be a source of comfort to you at this very sad time.

Love and Prayers,

Donna Keith Bossa

Mimi, Kathy, Billy, Jimmy, Ray and Peter....how many wonderful memories we have of Ray, and all the Baldwins. He and Mimi were among our first friends when we moved here over 30 years ago. We shared herb fairs and horses and parties and laughter...and Kathy, Pam and Susie shared much that they still haven't told us. At this time of sadness, I hope you will remember the joy, the smiles and the laughter, as both Bob and I do.

With love...Barbara and Bob, Pam and Susie

My fondest memories of my Uncle Ray will always be his great sense of humor and mischievous challenges, not only to his own children, but to his nieces & nephews, too. He was kind and generous to us all and I will miss his good company. However, where-ever he will travel now, he will be a great companion to those he will meet and greet on his way.

We all miss you, Ray.

Love & best wishes,

Chuck.
