Robert Kelly Obituary

Robert R. Kelly Jr.
On Wednesday, December 18, 2024, Robert R. Kelly Jr. entered eternal rest, after a four-year battle with illness. He was 80 years old.
Born on February 26, 1944, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Robert was a proud graduate of Bassick High School and briefly attended the University of Bridgeport. On April 1, 1969, Robert was sworn in as a patrolman with the Bridgeport Police Department, where he served for over 32 years. He worked his way up through the ranks, rising to the position of Captain, overseeing Community Services. On February 20, 1998, Robert was promoted to Deputy Chief of Police, a role he held until his retirement on June 1, 2001.
Robert's greatest joy was his family. He cherished spending time with his loved ones, especially at his favorite vacation spot, Cape Cod. Summers were filled with family picnics and winters with holiday dinners. Christmas time was his favorite, always ensuring that all felt welcome. His big heart and deep devotion extended to his roles as a son, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Robert was predeceased by his parents, Robert R. Kelly Sr. and Marie Kelly, and his brother, Gerald Kelly. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon, with whom he shared nearly 52 years of marriage.
Robert is also survived by his children: Robert L. Kelly (Janette), Kathryn Conway, and Patrick S. Kelly (Renee); six grandchildren: Matthew and Ashley Kelly, Joseph Conway and Shannon Citron, Bridget and Regan Kelly; five great-grandchildren: Ryan, Isabella, Benjamin, Aria, and Jaxon; his sister-in-law, Joanne Kelly; and many nephews and nieces.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, December 27th, from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM at Larson Funeral Home, located at 1209 Post Road, Fairfield Center. The service will follow at 1:30 PM at Saint Augustine Cathedral Parish in Bridgeport. Robert will be buried immediately after the service at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Trumbull. Deputy Chief Kelly was my supervisor for a few of my years at BPD. He was always pleasant, and always fun and kind. He´d walk in the door in the morning and ask the guys, "where are we going for lunch?" Although I never met you Sharon, he spoke of you often enough for me to still remember your name. So sorry for your loss.

We were privileged to have worked with Bob for many years at The Bridgeport Police Department. A working relationship that evolved into a wonderful close and cherished friendship. We will miss our long chats and get-togethers. We are heartbroken but take solace in the fact that he's not suffering anymore. Our deepest condolences to Sharon and family.

To the family of Robert Kelly. My sincere condolences. I did not work with Him during our time on the Police Dept. (different platoon) but we ran into one another on occasion. Bob was very well liked by all who worked with and knew Him. May His memories carry you through this difficult time.
