Robert P. Sbriglio, MD, MPH
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Robert P. Sbriglio, MD, MPH, age 72, of Stratford, Connecticut. Beloved husband, father, physician, colleague, and friend to many, Dr. Sbriglio passed away peacefully at home on January 26, 2026, with his wife, Catherine, and son, Max, by his side, following a courageous ten-month battle with glioblastoma.
Born in New Britain, Connecticut, Robert was the son of the late Robert and Margaret Sbriglio of Fenwick, Old Saybrook. Spending his early years in Chester, CT, Robert received his early education at Suffield Academy and went on to pursue higher education with enthusiasm and breadth. He attended the University of Pennsylvania, earned his bachelor's degree from Boston University, graduating cum laude, and later received his medical degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago. He completed his advanced residency training at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and Yale University School of Medicine. Reflecting his lifelong love of learning, he completed a Master of Public Health at Yale University, specializing in healthcare management.
Known affectionately to colleagues and friends as "Dr. Bob," he lived a life defined by kindness, intellectual curiosity, service, and deep compassion for others.
Dr. Sbriglio dedicated his professional life to helping others. Early in his career, he founded PLEXUS Health Services, a private multi-specialty psychiatric practice dedicated to providing mental and behavioral health care services. Board-certified in general psychiatry, addiction medicine, and geriatric medicine, his clinical excellence combined with his empathy and unwavering support profoundly changed the lives of countless individuals and families. Awards and honors while in private practice include listings in Castle Connolly's Best Doctors in America and Connecticut's Best Doctors by Connecticut Magazine.
Later, he joined his parents and brother in the family nursing home and health care businesses, leading with humility and purpose at Ryders Health Management and Lord Chamberlian Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility, where he served in multiple capacities including licensed nursing home administrator, assistant medical director, and chief medical officer. Through his strategic vision and steady presence, he oversaw the company's transition to electronic health record systems and the implementation of new technologies, while also providing clinical innovation and mentorship.
An accomplished academic and scholar, Dr. Sbriglio was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and previously held faculty appointments at Yale School of Medicine and New York Medical College, where he helped educate and mentor future physicians. He authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters on psychiatry, addiction medicine, and public health. His expertise extended beyond clinical practice through leadership roles and consulting with healthcare systems, insurers, and major corporations.
In addition to his lifelong work in medicine, Robert had a passion for real estate development, taking great pride in bringing the early vision of Parkway Plaza Stratford to life. He was especially proud to see the first cornerstone of the site completed, a Starbucks, where he was happy to be the first customer served. He also served on the Board of the Merritt Parkway Conservancy and was an avid antique and classic car enthusiast. He proudly hosted the Ryders Landing car shows for many years, bringing together his love of automobiles and music and his joy in connecting with people.
Outside of his academic, medical, and business pursuits, he spent two formative years at Berklee College of Music, studying jazz piano - a passion that stayed with him throughout his life and reflected his creative and inquisitive spirit.
Robert leaves behind his wife, Catherine, the love of his life and best friend; and their son, Max, of whom he was immensely proud. He is also survived by his brother, Martin Sbriglio (Jennifer); cousin, Paul Liistro (Brenda); and many other cherished family, friends, and colleagues.
True to his character, Dr. Bob faced his terminal illness as he lived his life, with optimism, determination, hope, and humor. Despite months of intensive treatment and physical limitations, he never allowed illness to diminish his spirit or his appreciation for life.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation teams at Gaylord Hospital for their exceptional dedication, compassion, and care.
