Cocco, Dr. Thomas
Dr. Thomas Cocco, 86, beloved and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, who was a life-long resident of Bridgeport, Connecticut died peacefully on Wednesday, January 11, 2017, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut on February 14, 1930, Dr. Cocco was the son of Domenic Cocco and Mary (Benedetto) Cocco.
After graduating Georgetown University in 1952, he earned his medical degree from Rome Medical College, Italy, in 1958. He began his medical internship at Meriden Hospital and subsequently completed a surgical residency at St. Raphael's Hospital. From the years of 1959-1966, he became a clinical instructor at Jersey City Medical Center Seton Hall College of Medicine, was an Oncology resident at Westfield Cancer Hospital, and became Chief Surgical Resident of St. Raphael's Hospital and Norwalk Hospital Preceptor in surgery. From 1969 until his 85th birthday, he was in private practice in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
He was a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, 1969 Attending Staff at Bridgeport Hospital; Surgery, Courtesy Staff Park City Hospital. He was surgically licensed in New York, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.
He was a member of the Bridgeport Medical Society, Connecticut Medical Society, American Medical Association, Connecticut Society American Board Surgeons, American Trauma Society, Connecticut Burn Society, American Society of Proctology, American Society Colo-Rectal Surgery, American Society Abdominal Surgeons, American Society of Surgery of Hand, and Teaching Service Seton Hall College Med – now New Jersey State Medical School.
Dr. Cocco was published in the following publications:
October 1958, Journal of Hematology, "Transfusion Heterogeneous Blood"; November 1961, Connecticut Journal of Medicine, "Islet Cell Tumors of the Pancreas"; August 1963, "Portal Hypertension Use of Tri-Metaphencamphor Sulfate "Arfonad" in Lowering Pressure. Annals of Surgery"; July 1976, Connecticut Journal of Medicine, "Embolization Bullet From Gun Shot Wound to Left Internal Carotid Artery."
Dr. Cocco was known to all colleagues, residents, nurses and patients as a kind, caring physician and friend. He was well known for his open-door policy to all; regardless of circumstances or ability to pay, no one was ever turned away.
He also attended the Sorbonne University in Paris, studying fine arts and oil painting.
Dr. Cocco was the true definition of a Renaissance Man who had talents in many different fields of study; classical music, master pianist, artist, and painter. He truly embodied the wholeness of humanity and will be remembered by all whose lives he touched.
Survivors include, his wife of 49 years Carol Collins Cocco; four children; Attorney Thomas Cocco and his wife Attorney Lori Ginsberg Cocco of Easton, Attorney Christopher Cocco of Greenwich, Justin Cocco of Bridgeport, and Nicole Cocco Costantino and her husband Stephen Costantino of Easton; his three beloved grandchildren; Mica, Tommy, and Ava.
Calling hours will be from 3:00-7:00 pm on Sunday, January 15th, 2017, Larson Funeral Home, 2496 North Ave, Bridgeport, CT. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dr. Cocco's name to St. Jude Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee, 38106.

Tom, I know with you many talents & skills God has put you to work for him in the next realm. Our daughter Alexander died tragically in her boyfriends plane in the gulf this February. She was a beautiful, intelligent wonderful person as you were. I know you are together in heaven.
