David John Barnes, 66, of
Eagle Lake, FL, passed away peacefully on January 27,
2026. Born on June 27, 1959, in
Bridgeport, Connecticut. David moved to Florida in
1979, where he built not only a home but a community around his passions, friendships,
and family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elaine Hunchak and Robert
Barnes.
David is survived by his beloved daughter, Brittney Ann Barnes Wimberly; his son-in-
law, Brent Wimberly; and his treasured granddaughter, Violet Wimberly, who brought
him endless pride and joy. He is also survived by his life partner and fiancée, Sandra
Kohlmeyer, with whom he shared love, laughter, and many adventures. David leaves
behind his brother, Doug Barnes, his sister, Sandra Fleet, and many extended family
members and dear friends.
An animal lover at heart, David adored his loyal dachshund, Darla, and held a special
place in his heart for his late dachshund, Piper, who remained one of his cherished
companions.
David had a lifelong love for cars, craftsmanship, and creativity. He was happiest in the
garage building and restoring hot rods and antique cars, or in his workshop
metalworking and creating unique garden art. He's founded car clubs and hosted his
own car show, Cars and Coffee, a gathering that reflected his enthusiasm for engines,
design, and bringing people together. On most weekends, David could be found at car
shows across Central Florida, proudly sharing his builds and connecting with fellow
enthusiasts. He also held a CDL driver's license, another reflection of his love for the
road and all things automotive. He especially treasured his current projects, a 1966 El
Camino and a 1932 Ford Hot Rod, which were never just cars to him, but works of art
and expressions of his craft.
David dedicated many years of service to the City of Haines City, beginning with the
Parks and Recreation team before moving to the Storm and Wastewater Division. He
retired from the city in 2019 after 20 years of dependable service and hard work. Before
working for the City, jobs included a phone company and Camping World.
He was known for his mechanical talent, his generosity with his time and knowledge, his
humor, and his ability to make anyone feel welcome. Whether lending a hand, sharing a
story, or firing up an engine, David left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
David's legacy lives on in his family, his creations, the cars he built, and the community
he fostered. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
