Andrew Smith Obituary

He died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, in Santa Monica, Calif., while volunteering at the Nissan Open PGA golf tournament at the Riviera Country Club.

Born to Arthur J. Smith of Camp Hill and the late Constance Shipley, who died in 2000, he graduated in 1986 from Stephen Decatur High School, Berlin. Md., and attended Towson State University. He began working in the restaurant industry at Tio Gringo's, Seacrets, the Great American Cook-Out, Souris Saloon and Legends, and helped open Nacho Mamas in Baltimore.

He then joined the golf industry, receiving his degree from Rutger's Professional Golf Turn Management School. He was employed as a foreman with River Run Golf Club and worked at Hunt Valley Country Club, The Bay Club, the Country Club of Hershey and most recently the course at Lighthouse Sound as the assistant superintendent.

He had also worked with the LPGA Tour and the Nike Tour, the Scottish Open at Loch Lomand Golf Club. Recently he had moved back to Berlin, Md., to share a home with De and Hoss McCormack.

Besides his father, Mr. Smith is survived by his stepmother, Anna Mae Smith of Camp Hill; two brothers, Matthew Shipley and William L. Holtry; two sisters, Suzanne Jones and Shirley Frye; two aunts and uncles; several nieces and nephews; and a grandnephew.

Friends may call Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. in Hastings Funeral Home, 19 S. Main St., Selbyville, Del., and Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the church.

On Feb. 23, PGA Tour officials held a memorial service for him and dedicated the flag at the 13th green in his honor.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association, 800 E. Main St., Salisbury, MD 21801.
