Gilbert Becker Obituary

Gilbert M. Becker, 85, of Mechanicsburg, passed away Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, in Select Specialty Hospital, Camp Hill.

He was born on Aug. 5, 1921, in Newport, to the late Reamer H. and Grace Moritz Becker.

Gilbert was a graduate of Mechanicsburg High School, class of 1940. He retired from Ohio Causality Insurance Co., where he was an underwriter.

Gilbert was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mechanicsburg and the Merle William Guyer Sunday School Class.

He was a Army veteran of World War II, where he served as a staff sergeant with the 319th Unit Infantry Regiment, 80th Division, Third Army. He served under Gen. George Patton and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the Distinguished Unit Badge, the European Middle Eastern Medal with four stars, and the Combat Infantry Badge.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Marie Becker, who died on Jan. 17, 1999.

Gilbert is survived by a daughter, Tonya B. (and her husband, Steve) Mowery of Mechanicsburg; grandchildren, Tasha and Carson Mowery; sisters, Genevieve Schrader of Cleona and Sandra K. Coover of Mechanicsburg; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Kent T. Becker, and a sister, Janet E. Sudak, who died on May 17, 1995.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, in the Malpezzi Funeral Home, 8 Market Plaza Way, Mechanicsburg, with the Rev. Candace S. Arnold officiating. Burial, with military honors conducted by the Cumberland County Honor Guard, will be held in Mechanicsburg Cemetery. A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made for research to the American Diabetes Association, Harrisburg Office, 3544 N. Progress Ave., Suite 101, Harrisburg, PA 17110 or to the American Lung Association, 3001 Old Gettysburg Road, Camp Hill, PA 17011.

Arrangements are being handled by the Hollinger Funeral Home and Crematory, 501 N. Baltimore Ave., Mt Holly Springs.
