Lewis Patterson Obituary

Lewis T. Patterson, MD

October 15, 1929 - March 6, 2026

Lewis T. Patterson, MD, 96, passed away peacefully at his home on March 6, with his loving family by his side. Born in Halifax, Pa., on October 15, 1929, he was the son of the late L. Don and Florence (nee Brymesser) Patterson. Raised in Carlisle, he graduated from Carlisle High School in 1947 and Franklin & Marshall College in 1951, later earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1955 and began a long, distinguished career in medicine.

Following his internship, residency, and fellowship in General and Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Patterson proudly served in the United States Air Force. During the Vietnam War, he was stationed at Clark Air Base in the Philippines, where he served as Chief of Surgery and Chairman of the Department of Surgery-the only thoracic-certified surgeon in Southeast Asia for nine months. His lifesaving work was featured in the 1966 documentary To Save a Soldier, narrated by Henry Fonda, which depicted the dramatic rescue of a wounded service member.

In 1968, Dr. Patterson returned to Central Pennsylvania to be closer to family and joined Harrisburg Polyclinic Hospital as Director of Surgery and Surgical Residency-a position he would hold for more than 25 years. Revered for his steady hand, sharp intellect, and kind heart, he cared deeply for his patients and mentored generations of young surgeons. His leadership extended beyond the hospital: he served as President of both the Dauphin County Medical Society and the Pennsylvania South Central Professional Standards Review Organization, helping to shape the future of healthcare throughout the region. Above all, Lewis was devoted to his family, who were his greatest joy. He shared 56 wonderful years with his beloved wife, Phyllis (nee Roseman) Patterson, who passed away in 2012. Together they built a home filled with love, laughter, and faith. He was also preceded in death by his son, John Alan Patterson.

He is survived by his sister, Joan Line; four children, L. Thomas Patterson, Jr. (Therese), Larry T. Patterson (Mary), Jan Patterson Taylor (William), and Lynn Seymour (John); 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense pride and happiness.

A man of deep integrity and service, Dr. Patterson was a 33rd Degree Mason and an anchor of his community. Those who knew him will remember his calm presence, generous spirit, and steadfast devotion to those he loved. In keeping with his lifelong commitment to service, the family invites memorial contributions to organizations that reflect his values: First Presbyterian Church of Carlisle, Chapel Pointe, and the Homeland Center of Harrisburg. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to his team of devoted caregivers.

A viewing will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2026, followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church, 2A North Hanover St., Carlisle, PA 17013. Rev. Anthony Lorenz will officiate the service. This is the church Lewis grew up in and was a long-time member. The burial will be private at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville with Military Honors. Condolences may be left at www.EwingBrothers.com.

I worked with Dr. Patterson for several years and never knew a kinder, smarter, funnier, and more ethical physician and human being. I was thinking of him and Phyllis not 30 minutes ago as I drove past the road they used to live on. I was blessed to know him.
