Ruth Louise Stone was born August 21, 1941, in
Carlisle, Pennsylvania. She was one of seven children born from the union of Lester Emmanuel Stone and Lillian Ruth (Tosten) Stone. She graduated high school from Carlisle.
Ruth married the love of her life: Don Charles Smith and the happy couple was blessed with the birth of three children. For a majority of her life, Ruth dedicated herself to raising her children. Regardless of the challenges life presented, she remained an upbeat person who could always find humor in any situation. Her infectious laughter served as a source of comfort and strength for her family. Ruth never complained and instead focused on the bright side of life, teaching her children the value of optimism and perseverance.
From 1976 to 1989, Ruth and Charles made their home in White Lake before moving to Oscoda. He chartered a boat, inspiring Ruth to seek a job of her own, leading her to work at Burger King in Oscoda. For twenty-one years, she embraced her role with enthusiasm, eventually becoming the afternoon manager.
As an avid wood burner, Ruth devoted many hours to perfecting her craft, primarily working freehand to create stunning designs. Her passion for wood burning led her to become a respected member of the Sunrise Woodcarvers Association, where she shared her love for art with fellow enthusiasts.
Ruth's social nature flourished at the Oscoda Senior Center, where she was an active member of the community. There, she not only continued her wood-burning practice but also enjoyed connecting with others, sharing stories, and attending events.
She also cherished time spent uninterrupted, watching movies on the Hallmark Channel. It was her escape, a world where love and happiness thrived.
