Norman Shires Obituary
Born April 5, 1928, in Lansford, he was a son of the late Norman F. and Elizabeth A. Richards Shires.
Norm retired as a logistician from Defense Logistics Evaluation Agency at the New Cumberland Army Depot. He earned his engineering degree from Penn State University in 1949 and was an active member of the Alumni Association and Nittany Lion Club.
Norm was a fly-fishing instructor and noted speaker on entomology throughout the United States. He was a co-author and/or photographer for several fly-fishing books, the most recent of which is Fly Fishing Pressured Waters. He was a member of the Federation of Fly Fishers; Fly Fisher's Club of Harrisburg, where he was a recipient of the Order of the Hat; Big Spring Watershed Association; Trout Unlimited; and Brotherhood of the Junglecock. He was and a charter member of the Pennyslvania Fly Fishing Museum, Boiling Springs.
Norm was also a gifted amateur woodworker and framer and was a past scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 52 of Camp Hill.
He was the widower of Ruth A. Shires and was also preceded in death by his grandson, Cooper John Shires.
Surviving is his wife Ann G. Shires; a daughter, Elizabeth A. Lusk and husband, Steven, of Dillsburg; two sons, Richard N. Shires and wife, Judith, of Newville and Ralph E. Shires and wife, Susan, of New Cumberland; a brother, Richard W. Shires and wife, Anita, of Boiling Springs; seven grandsons; one granddaughter; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Malpezzi Funeral Home, Mechanicsburg, where there will be a visitation from 12:30 to 2 p.m.
Inurnment will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens at the convenience of the family.
In keeping with Norm's ideal of fostering the love of fishing and conservation among youth, his family requests memorial contributions be made to the Brotherhood of the Junglecock Building Fund, c/o Ralph Shires, 1103 Oak Lane, New Cumberland, PA 17070.

My sincere sympathy goes out to Ann and the entire Shires' family. Norm had a great big heart and spread his love of the outdoors and of life around to many people. He will be missed greatly. When I think of Norm I'll see him fly fishing with his buddies, maybe on "Penn's Creek" or feeding his many creatures of the earth and the lovely birds all while sitting in his recliner in the den, enjoying the afternoon with Ann and watching nature out the window. I will also always remember the the corn roasts in the not so recent past. They were great parties! Thanks for being so kind to the earth Norm! God will bless you now for all your kindnesses.

A true gentleman. As children, my brother and sisters always looked forward to our annual spring trip to Pennsylvania. Norm and Ruth always greeted us with open arms. August in Vermont....The corn roast, the camp fire. There are few things etched in my memories that are as clear as Norm's sincere laugh. May his trout always turn upstream.
