Thomas Alexander Obituary

Born Jan. 16, 1932, in St. Louis, Mo., he was a son of the late Thomas F. and Virginia (Mader) Alexander.

Mr. Alexander was the widower of Barbara (Artis) Alexander, who died July 7, 1997. They were married 45 years.

Mr. Alexander attended the Woodcraft Institute and the St. Louis Music and Art University, where he studied commercial art. He began his career working in the pattern department of the Brown Shoe Co. in June of 1953. He was then transferred to the Kinney Shoe Corp., Carlisle, in February of 1960, where he remained until his retirement in 1990.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He joined the military in June of 1949 and was a machine gunner with the 2nd Division. After being wounded, he received a citation for the Order of the Purple Heart.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, a member of Carlisle VFW Post 477 and a life member of Elks Lodge 578, all in Carlisle. He was also a member for eight years of the St. Louis Rolling Rams, a professional Wheelchair Basketball Team, which took the National Championship three times.

Mr. Alexander is survived by two sons, Thomas F. Alexander III of Carlisle and Gregory R. Alexander of Newville; four daughters, Deborah Alexander-Mullen and Dodi Alexander-Barber, both of Carlisle, Deirdre Derick of Cape Cod, Mass., and Dawn Alexander Quintero of Boiling Springs; a half-brother, Robert Getz of California; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Graveside services with military honors, conducted by the Cumberland County Honor Guard, will be at 3 p.m. Monday in the Ashland Cemetery, York Road, Carlisle.

A celebration of his life will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Carlisle Elks Lodge, Ridge Street, Carlisle, where all friends are welcome.

Hollinger Funeral Home and Crematory, Mt. Holly Springs, is in charge of the arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Scotland School for Veterans Children, 3583 Scotland Road, Scotland, PA 17254.
