CHRISTOPHER MARKLE Obituary
Born Oct. 16, 1954, in Gary, Ind., he was the son of Joseph G.B. and Mary Elizabeth (Kelly) Markle. Christopher married Sophia H. Varcados on Aug. 3, 1997, in Tahoe, Calif.
Christopher was a graduate of Indiana University-Bloomington, and the Yale School of Drama. He enjoyed an outstanding career as an artist, writer, teacher and director of theater, with such professionals as the Acting Company in New York; Livui Ciulei, the distinguished director of the Guthrie Theater, where Markle was resident director from 1980-1985; DearKnows, a New York City-based company known for its innovation and of which he was a co-founder; SummerNITE, as artistic director; and other national and international venues. A tenured professor at Northern Illinois University, Markle also conducted many master classes nationally, and taught at a number of institutions including the Studio School of the Moscow Art Theatre, NYU, SMU, Bard College, the British-American Drama Academy, Princeton and Texas Tech universities.
He is survived by his wife, Sophia Varcados of DeKalb; a daughter, Zoe Markle of DeKalb; and four sisters, Karen Knab of Vienna, Va., Marilyn Markle of Chicago, Alana Markle of Bend, Ore., and Bonnie Markle of Vienna, Va.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb, with Fr. Godwin N. Asuquo of Christ the Teacher Parish in DeKalb officiating. Cremation has taken place at the Anderson Funeral Home Crematory in DeKalb. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial is being established for Christopher J. Markle for SummerNITE, NIU School of Theatre and Dance in care of Anderson Funeral Home Ltd., P.O. Box 605, 2011 S. Fourth St., DeKalb, IL 60115.

I knew Chris at the beginning of his career. He was an extremely kind and warm person. Added to that he was an insightful director. He was very creative. I enjoyed with others in the Company many humorous hours on tour. He will be sorely missed. "Heaven rest him now."
