Constantinos Vasilopoulos Obituary

Constantinos "Gus" A. Vasilopoulos
Died: April 17, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Constantinos "Gus" A. Vasilopoulos. He left us on April 17, 2025 at the age of 89 surrounded by his loving family. He was a man of immense wisdom, love, and strength, backed by an unwavering spirit. His smile, his greetings, his stories and his humor could light up a room.
Gus was born in 1936 in the village of Agiorgitika, Greece. He came to America when he was 20 years old. He met his wife, Armande, at Northern Illinois University, and they married in 1958. Gus loved children, and they soon started welcoming four of their own. Gus was the manager of the original McDonald's in DeKalb, Illinois. He then purchased his uncle's shoe repair shop located in downtown DeKalb, where he worked for about ten years. After moving to Rochelle in the early 1970s, he became a foreman at a local concrete supplier. An injury at work left him disabled physically but not disabled in spirit. He decided to further his education and became a full time student at Kishwaukee College. It was there that his love for art began. He continued to flourish at Northern Illinois University, where he graduated with a degree in Political Science. His art included making pottery, sketching, and writing poems that were often published in the NIU Towers literary magazine. In his later years, he loved to garden and spend time outdoors.
Gus and his wife and family enjoyed many travels and gatherings around our country over the years. One of the highlights of our travels was a family trip to Greece in 1988.
Gus cherished every moment he spent with family and loved ones. His wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren brought him tremendous joy. He was deeply loved and will be deeply missed by all. Survivors include his wife Armande; children: Nick (Eileen Garvey), Stacy (Jim Lum), Dimitra (Brent Cornwell) and Evgenia Diane; nine grandchildren: Samuel (Starla), Rayelle, and Eleah Nokovich, Katie (Matt), Emily (Cam) and Maggie Vasilopoulos, William (Mackenzie), Laurette and Jacob Cornwell and three great grandchildren: Scarlett, Sarah Grace and Sophia. Survivors also include his sister, Dimitra, brothers: Nick and Bill, and several nieces and nephews.
To honor his remarkable life, visitation will take place on Saturday, April 26th, from 9:30 to 11:00 A.M. at the Rochelle United Methodist Church, 709 4th Ave., Rochelle with an 11:00 A.M. funeral service officiated by Pastor Katherine Paisley. Burial will be at Lawnridge Cemetery in Rochelle. A luncheon will follow at the church. Memorials may be made in Gus's memory to the United Methodist Church.
