DAVID CARLISLE Obituary

DeKALB – The Rev. David Wilson Carlisle, son of Curtis Luke Carlisle and Sarah Wilson Hurd, died Dec. 29, 2013, after a long illness.
Born May 30, 1940, in Tupelo, Miss., he graduated from Lambuth College in 1963, and from Vanderbilt Divinity School, and later received a master's degree from Dubuque Theological Seminary.
David served several parishes in Tennessee while in seminary, then moved to Illinois where he served as associate pastor at the United Methodist Church in Dixon. From Dixon he moved to Marseilles, Ill., to serve the United Methodist Church there. Following that he also served Sugar Grove UMC, Aldersgate UMC in Wheaton, Centennial UMC in Rockford and First UMC in DeKalb, and also served as district superintendent of the DeKalb District of the UMC.
On June 15, 1963, he married Amy Simpson at Trinity Methodist Church in Memphis. They were divorced 11 years later. They have two daughters: Amy Katherine Weatherford, of Kirkland, Wash., and Kristine Allane Martineau, of Memphis. He also is survived by eight grandchildren.
Subsequently, he married Marie Laatz Bramel in May of 1975. They were married 38 years.
A memorial service was held on Feb. 10, at First United Methodist Church in DeKalb.
David was a strong proponent of education, personal growth and continued learning throughout his lifetime. Since he was involved in these endeavors in both his personal and professional life as he went about his work within the church, any donations are requested to go to the local community college in the DeKalb District, Kishwaukee College, 21193 Malta Road, Malta, IL 60105.

I was retiring from teaching that year and

and advised me through many months. I will
be ever grateful for his counseling. I
also gained much from his sermons and wise
teaching. He was truly a wonderful person.

Our families friendship began when Rev. Carlisle was Pastor at Sugar Grove UMC. David sheparded nieces and nephew thru Confirmation; married a niece and was a wonderful neighbor. We were thrilled when he and Marie came to DeKalb. He was stability and intellectually challenging in Faith. David presided over the marriage of our son and over the loss of a daughter and son-in -law. A rock. Our memories are fond ones of you and our life time family friendship. Godspeed David Carlisle.

David Carlisle was very important to my faith. He was patient and understanding about my doubts, and introduced me to literature that strengthened my faith, as did his sermons, which were NOT performances, or sugar-coated, but very direct and inspiring. Thank you for that David.

We are so sorry to hear of Pastor Carlisle's death. He was the senior pastor of First UMC when I was hired to be the choir director at the young age of only 23 years old! It seems so hard to believe that was 20 years ago and although I am in ministry at a different church now, Lynelle and I continue to have such warm memories of our years in DeKalb. He was so supportive during his time at First UMC and I valued his friendship very much. Our prayers and blessings to his family.

So sorry to hear of Rev. Carlisle's passing. He was a great Minister. He baptized my son in 1991 and helped me through both my parents passing away in 1993. My sympathy to the family.
