DONALD SUNDLY Obituary

Donald L. Sundly, 78, a lifetime resident of Sycamore, Ill., went to be with his Lord on Monday, March 3, 2008, at the DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center in DeKalb.
Born Jan. 22, 1930, in Sycamore, he was the son of Clifford and Alice (Nachtigall) Sundly. Don served as an airplane mechanic in the US. Air Force during the Korean conflict, stationed from 1950-1953 in Cold Bay, Alaska.
He was employed as a tool-and-die maker with Ideal Industries for 35 years and was a member of the Church of St. Mary in Sycamore for more than 50 years, serving several years as an usher. Many couples have used the wedding kneeler that Don built for the church.
He was a huge sports fan, coaching his kids in park district sporting events and serving as an assistant Little League coach from 1963-1976. As a 1950s graduate of Sycamore High School, he especially enjoyed watching his children and granddaughter play as Sycamore Spartans. Don participated as an assistant Boy Scout leader with his sons from 1965-1976.
Don enjoyed woodworking, fishing and family vacations with dear friends. He was well-known for his dry wit and one-liners that would undoubtedly put a smile on one's face. In order to make the world a better place, for many years Don met with friends at the local coffee shop to discuss sporting events and solve world, national and local issues.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara, of Sycamore; four children, Tom (Dawn) Sundly of Harris, Minn., Cathy (fiancé, Steve Smith) Sundly of Sycamore, Dan (Shirley) Sundly of Escondido, Calif., and Denise (Dan) Setchell of Sycamore; eight grandchildren, Christina (Simo) Lemrani, Alex, Zackary, Drew, Valerie, Ashley, Lauren and Matt; a great-grandchild, Sophia, and another great-grandchild expected in August 2008.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Clare Louise (Marvin) Loomer and Charlotte "Chan" Sundly.
The funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at the Church of St. Mary in Sycamore, with Fr. Frank J. Timar, M.S.C., officiating. Burial will be at Ohio Grove Cemetery in Sycamore. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, March 7, at Butala Funeral Home and Crematory in Sycamore, with a wake service to be recited at 6:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial is being established for Donald Sundly in care of Butala Funeral Home and Crematory, 1405 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore, IL 60178.

Dear Barb and Family,
My thoughts and prayers have been with all of you for a long time and continue. I wish I even offered the van sooner. There could have been more happy times at home/I'm sorry. Please know if I could of been with you I would have but it's difficult with everyone so busy. So, I'll just have my memories. I think the last one was when you were at the Parkway for dinner and so was I. Don always had some comment to make me feel special and put others at ease. What a gift! Your whole family is like that also. A gift to others. Thank you.
God Bless, Love and Prayers,
Janet & Bailey

Dear Denise & The Entire Sundly Family, Our hearts are heavy for you in this time of loss. We are all so sad to hear of your fathers passing. We have been gone such a long time from Sycamore but many memories are very clear in our minds. One of them is the memories of your father and your entire family. Sycamore would have never been the same without you. Your father was such a wonderful man. He will be deeply missed. The world needs more people like him in it. Our entire family sends our love to you and prayers for strength during this time. I personally spent so many days at the Sundly home, Boo I am so sorry and I love you so much you are my best friend and I can imagine this loss is great for you. I will never forget your dad. He always made me laugh and he always had some great funny comment, or wise crack to throw my way. I would so love to walk through your door on Airport Road after riding my bike miles(ha) to see you and hear him say hey and call me"little Fossen" and ask me how I was. He always made me laugh and smile. Your family is one of the best memories for me of Sycamore. I loved your whole family they always showed me kindness. To all of you, Mrs. Sundly you are the best.. my love to you and big hugs to Cathy, Tom & Dan. From all of us, The Fossen Family and Cari & Cary Sauls.
