John Hetland, 77, of Davis Junction, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at UW Health Swedish American Hospital in Rockford, Illinois.
He was born December 17, 1946, in DeKalb, Illinois, the son of Austin and Alice (Michael) Hetland. John married Ada (Diaz) Hetland on July 12, 1969 in Alabama and again on August 2, 1969 in New York City. They were married for 55 years.
John was a graduate of Sycamore High School and earned his Associate Degree from Kishwaukee College. He was a Veteran of the US Army serving during the Vietnam War. John was a lifetime member of the VFW in Rochelle, the American Legion in Stillman, and Trinity Lutheran Church in DeKalb. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, planting fruit trees, visiting orchards and canning.
He is survived by his wife Ada; his two sons John (Kristina) Hetland of Loveland, Co and Keith (Sandy) Hetland of Clare, IL; his daughter Natasha (Don Cherry) Hetland of DeKalb; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his brothers Jim (Debi) Hetland of Haynes City, FL and Eric (Thes) Hetland of Tacoma, WA; and his sister Shirley Johnson of Chicago; also many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters Barbara Hetland and Sonja Hetland; and his brother Karl Hetland.
The Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 9, 2024, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 303 South 7th Street, DeKalb, with Rev. Lance Gackowski officiating. Interment of cremated remains will follow at Fairview Park Cemetery, in DeKalb, with Full Military Honors by DeKalb American Legion Post 66.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Hetland Family in care of Anderson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 605, 2011 South Fourth Street, DeKalb, IL 60115.

Ada; I used to work with you at Essex on Dodge Ave back in 1969-1970. Sue McEvoy, Connie, you & me all became close friends. That's how I knew John.
