Matthew A. Johnson, 56, of Kirkland, IL, passed away Saturday, Aug. 24, 2024, at home.
Born Sept. 6, 1967, in DeKalb, the son of Vernon L. and Jane R. (Byers) Johnson, Matt enjoyed going to farm toy shows with his father, canoeing in the Kishwaukee River, motorcycling, and going to museums. A 1986 graduate of Hiawatha High School, Matt enjoyed participating in FFA and 4-H. He worked many years at Hintzsche Fertilizer Company.
A member of First Lutheran Church in Kirkland, where he served as an usher, Matt will be remembered for his friendliness, warm smile and practical jokes; he was much loved and will be missed by his family and many friends.
Matt is survived by his parents, Vernon and Jane; siblings, Shannon (Shawn) Ross and Todd (Jordyn) Johnson; nephews, Nathaniel and Noah Ross; life partner, Debra Roberts; children, Mary Grimm and Jon Grimm; uncle, William Byers; and several cousins. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Robert and Wanda Byers and Elsie Johnson.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 am Friday, Sept. 6, 2024, at First Lutheran Church of Kirkland, 510 West South St., Kirkland, IL 60146. A Celebration of Life will follow at his home at 4 pm the same day.
The family thanks the staff at Serenity Hospice for their compassionate care of Matt.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the family for a fund to be established.
