Died: August 9, 2025 in DEKALB, IL
Mildred C. "Millie (Ness) Scott , 94 of DeKalb, Illinois passed away on August 9 surrounded by family members in prayer as she let go of this life to join her Savior Jesus Christ and her departed Christian family and friends into God's Kingdom. In her own words; Millie was born in a farmhouse southwest of Malta, Illinois on February 27, 1931. She was born to Norwegian parents Johan G." John" and Signy "Marie" (Norland) Fillingsnes (shortened to "Ness" by her father upon entering Ellis Island).
At school age Millie and her family moved to a farm on West Fairview Rd. located between 1st Street and Nelson Road in DeKalb, Illinois. Millie attended the Country Slade School up to the 8th grade on South Malta road and west Taylor Street in DeKalb Township. In the summer, Millie and her younger sister Joan (pronounced JoAnn) enjoyed riding their bikes to Hopkins Park swimming Pool and attending summer time bible school at Trinity Lutheran Church DeKalb which she was a lifelong member.
At age 16, Millie was paid to keep house for their neighbors Jack and Ella Watson and in the summer of 1947, the Watsons invited Millie to stay with them when they moved to Albequerque, New Mexico and she could have opportunity to do her junior year of high school there. While Millie enjoyed her year in the southwest, her family moved off the farm and relocated in DeKalb. Mildred returned to her family in DeKalb to finish high school and started working at the Morris Variety store at the north east corner of 2nd Street and Lincoln highway in DeKalb. She worked there after school and holidays while attending her senior year of high school. Millie graduated DeKalb High School with her class in 1949.
After graduation, Millie went to work at the General Electric (GE) factory. It was there that she met co-worker, recently honorably discharged Navy Veteran, Charles "Chuck" Scott. He was to be her future husband.
In the summer of 1950, Millie and her parents and siblings, Irene, Sigurd and JoAnn took a trip to Norway. They sailed on the Norwegian ship Stavangerfjord. They were able to visit her father's two brothers and their families in the fjords of Bergen, Norway. They visited her mother's cousins in the country around Stavanger and Sandnes. While other siblings returned to the states, Millie and her sister Irene remained to work at the bicycle factory in Sandes to earn Christmas money. Relatives had invited them and their parents to stay for Christmas in Norway. January 1951 saw Millie and family sailing back on the new Norwegian steam ship Oslofjord where the Atlantic Ocean was sometimes rough and stormy. Millie enjoyed everything on the trip; meeting relatives, the food, the music, the country-and continued embracing the Norwegian culture throughout her life.
Millie and Chuck were married August 30, 1952, at Trinity Lutheran Church. This church had fond memories, her father, John helped build this church and her parents were founding members. They had 3 children, David, Thomas and Christine.
Chuck and Millie made sure their children had a family vacation every summer, particularly out west. The Alamo, Gettysburg, and Washington DC were common destinations. Summer Holidays were spent with her sister and brother in law, Irene and Egil Hansen and the rest of the "Ness tribe" at the Hansen's cabin in Friendship, Wisconsin and having lots of fun! In addition, Millie and Chuck and kids frequently added camping adventures and occasional mis-adventures) around the United States. Once retired, Chuck and Millie experienced cruises to Alaska and Hawaii when taking breaks from babysitting grandchildren.
Millie served in the GE factory women's club Gen.E-Dek and Trinity Lutheran Church clubs Women of the Word (WOW) and Dorkas Circle. Millie volunteered at the Salvation Army food Pantry and Meals on Wheels with her sister Hazel. She was a supporter of Love INC. (Love in the Name of Christ) DeKalb County Chapter.
