Dr. Chester "Chet" Lee Bynum, MD, 86, respected radiologist of Norman, Okla. passed away Saturday, July 29, 2017. He was born Feb. 26, 1931, in Tulsa, Okla. to William "Bill" Frederick and Ada Elizabeth "Betty" (Patrick) Bynum.
Chet graduated from Oklahoma City Classen High School in 1949 where he met the love of his life, Maureen Durrett. The couple's 65-year marriage began on May 24, 1952.
Chet graduated from of the University of Oklahoma the same year and lettered in football as a member of the 1950 Championship Team. Chet was also a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. After graduating from OU, Chet entered the University Of Oklahoma College Of Medicine where he received his MD in 1957. While practicing medicine, Chet also devoted time to several Medical Associations: the OU Medical School Association, the Oklahoma State Medical Association, New Mexico State Medical Association, and the San Juan County Medical Association. He was instrumental in the founding of Health for Friends and thoroughly enjoyed mentoring incoming OU medical students. In 1999 Dr. Bynum served as the Norman Regional Hospital Chief of Staff.
Chet was passionate about conservationism and true to his nature enthusiastically devoted energy serving as a board member of the Oklahoma Wildlife Federation, the National Wildlife Federation, the Sierra Club, and the Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Commission. I've just learned of Chet's passing. Working with him on projects and committees at St. Stephen's was always great. He brought a special insight to difficult situations and could light up a room with his smile. Norman will miss him. Heartfelt condolences to Maureen and family.

Maureen and family, Chet was one of the sweetest, kindest gentle man I have ever known and it was an honor. He was always so gracious to the many Assistance League people that trapped through your house and left mega mounds of paperwork, etc. May God Bless and keep your family wrapped in His arms to comfort and bring you peace. Love you, Montez Altom

My sincere condolences to Dr. Bynum's family. I met Chet at the Norman Barnes and Noble, where he was such a regular they kept his personal mug behind the counter. One day, New York Times in hand, he moseyed over and asked, "What are you writing?" and we started a conversation that lasted pretty much five mornings a week for years. Great, great guy. May you rest in peace, my friend.

Having been a long time patient of Dr. Bynum, in recent years it was a joy to be able to visit with him so often at B&N book store. We had some similar experiences in growing up. He was always very "upbeat" and it always left me with pleasant thoughts. A couple of his Med School classmates were friends of mine. He will be missed. Sympathies and prayers to his family.
