James Potter Obituary

James "Jerry" Potter, 76, of Bloomfield, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015, in his home with his family. Jerry was born Aug. 4, 1938, in Ft. Sumner, to Lee Roy and Irene Snead Potter.
He graduated from Ft. Sumner High School in 1957, played college football for one year at Western New Mexico University and transferred to Eastern New Mexico University, where he graduated in 1962 with a bachelor's degree in industrial arts education. He completed his master's degree in education with a certification in administration in 1971.
Jerry married Kathleen Swope June 1, 1967. He worked for 30 years for Cimarron Schools as an industrial arts teacher, driver's ed teacher, high school principal, athletic director, maintenance director and elementary school principal. Jerry drove a bus for Swope Transportation. He was Past Master of Cimarron Lodge No. 37 and a member of San Juan Lodge No. 25, and Past Worthy Patron of Cimarron Canyon Eastern Star No. 64.
Jerry taught hunters safety and is a life member of the NRA. He was chief of the Cimarron Fire Department and life member of the New Mexico Firefighters Association. He served as an officer of the Cimarron Maverick Club, and as cub master of Pack No. 68.
After retirement, he worked for Pacific Studs as a purchasing/sales agent. After moving to Bloomfield in 1998, he worked as a licensed contractor.
His hobbies were hunting, fishing, camping, building furniture and spending time with the family. He was an active member of the Cimarron and Bloomfield United Methodist Church, and Four Corners Emmaus Community.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jack; and sister, Jetty Joe Paul and husband Henry. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; daughter, Gretchen; son, Robert (Daelena); grandsons, Cayden, Rylen and Tyen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Jerry's life will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Bloomfield UMC.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bloomfield UMC Parsonage Fund, 1105 N. First St., Bloomfield, NM 87413.

Dear Kathy, we are so sorry for your loss, he was a special man. His dad drove my school bus, they were a lovely family! When Paul was a senior, he remembers Jerry doing his student teaching at Ft Sumner. Really enjoyed the times he drove the activities bus or car to basketball games.
We haven't seen you since working on Emmaus walks, miss those special weekends.

Mr. Potter was the principal of Cimarron High School when I was a Student there. What I remember about him was that he was a very kind and fair principal. He will be missed by many. Our Thoughts and Prayers are with his Family. God Bless you all.
