George Cohoon Obituary


Elizabeth City resident

George Walton Cohoon Jr., 79, of 1346 Northside Road, Elizabeth City, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013 at W.R. Winslow Memorial Home. Born in Elizabeth City, he was the son of the late George Walton and Florence Sample Cohoon and was the husband of Sylvia Byrd Cohoon. Mr. Cohoon was a faithful member of Berea Baptist Church for fifty-two years where he had been a former Chairman of the Deacons. He had worked at Cader Harris Department Store for twenty-eight years and then at Allstate Building Supply for twenty-five years. Mr. Cohoon was a sports enthusiast who had played for the Elizabeth City semi-pro baseball league, umpired and refereed for many years and played softball until he was seventy years old. He was a lifetime member of the Elizabeth City Jaycees and was a veteran of the United States Army. In addition to his wife of 59 years, Mr. Cohoon is survived by a son, George Walton "Walt" Cohoon III and wife, Phyllis; a daughter, Kimberly Cohoon Hudson and husband, John; and two grandsons, Riley Hudson and Cody Hudson, all of Elizabeth City. Also surviving is a brother, Irving Cohoon and wife, Gloria, of Grandy; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Ball. A memorial service will take place Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Berea Baptist Church. The family will receive friends following the service in the Family Life Center and at other times at the residence. Memorial donations may be made to the Berea Baptist Church Family Life Center, 2033 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, is assisting the Cohoon family. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.twifordfh.com.
