WINSTON-SALEM - Mattie Louise "Lou" Harrell, 89, of 4856 Hawkwood Trail, Winston-Salem, NC, died Thursday October 12, 2017 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born in Chesterfield, SC to the late Amy Shaw Gardner and John Tillman Gardner, and lived for many years in Elizabeth City, NC, with her husband, the late Joe Harrell. She resided in Winston-Salem under the care of her daughter, Libby and her husband, Marion.

Lou had a love for travelling, and especially enjoyed dancing with her husband and lifelong dance partner, Joe. She spent her life surrounded by friends and family, welcoming neighbors and loved ones over each Friday night to socialize around the "Round Table."

Lou is survived by her two brothers, Rick Gardner (Lydia) and Reece Gardner (Emma), two daughters, Jennifer Smith (Greg) of Goldsboro, NC, Elizabeth "Libby" Chadwick (Marion) of Winston-Salem, NC, two sons, Ronald J. Harrell (Sherry)of White House, TN, Joseph "Joe" Harrell (Leigh) of Las Vegas, NV, eleven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, Mark Harrell (Lisa), of Lebanon, TN.

Memorial services will be conducted on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. in Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with the Rev. Joe Griffith officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for visitation one hour prior to the services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
