ELIZABETH CITY - Robert Orlan Givens, Jr., age 70, of Elizabeth City, NC, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2024.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Carol Jean Midyette Givens; his son, Robert Orlan Givens, III (Tammy); grandchildren, Davis Orlan Givens and Abigail Grace Givens; two sisters, Bobbie Moore and Lois Brown (Allen); two brothers, Scott Patton Givens, Sr. (Kathy) and Tommy H. Copeland (Melissa); nephews and nieces, Miles Harris, Danielle Colvin, JP Lane, Allison Stallings, Randy Brown, Tabatha Baker, Shelia Hudson, Blake Wright, Kelsey Owens, Tyler Bright, Justin Bright, Aiden Copeland, and Ethan Copeland; and numerous special great nieces and nephews.
Robert was preceded in death by his father and mother, Robert Orlan Givens, Sr. and Carolyn Scott Givens; his sister, Mary Givens Lane; and his nephew, Scott Patton Givens, Jr.
He survived a diving accident on the Outer Banks on June 15, 1976, leaving him a quadriplegic. Despite all the difficulties he had in life, he was a joy to be around. Although disabled, he went on to be President and part owner of his family business, R. O. Givens Signs, Inc. since 1991 when his father went to be with the Lord. He was very blessed to have that outlet and was such an inspiration to many people that knew and met him. He enjoyed his work and loved to go to work every day in his special wheelchair, going down the road to the shop.
In 1988 he was on the board of Elizabeth City Boys Club. He attended Elizabeth City Baptist Church where our good friend and neighbor, Jon Nettesheim, is pastor.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 26, 2024 at Towne South Church of Christ, 2224 Peartree Road, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 with Pastor Jon Nettesheim officiating. The burial will be at New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will be at the residence at other times.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Elizabeth City Baptist Church, 616 W. Elizabeth Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 or to Towne South Church of Christ, 2224 Peartree Road, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 or a charity of one's choice.
