In everyone’s lives, there are people that touch your life and people that change it. It is a rare occasion that there is someone who does both. Thomas Butt, my uncle Thomas, did that for me. As he did for many of you, he lifted my family as he buried my father. He joined me in marriage to my wife of 15 yrs.
Biscuits
As a youth of 10 or 11 I can remember one hot summer day sitting in Providence Church Rd Meeting, day dreaming of the hot biscuits my uncle had made for the picnic that was to follow. During that time I heard him say two words that changed my life,” God is.”
With a radiant and never wavering demonstration of strength in faith and belief he went on to elaborate how “God is in the creation, how God is in everything, how God is in you and me.” Today I am certain that God is.
The late great southern humorist Lewis Grizzard once said that, “the reason homemade biscuits are so wonderful is because of the secret ingredient; love.”
I have fond memories as a very young boy, standing in the chair with his mother, my grandma, making biscuits. I have fond memories of his biscuits. I am in the process of teaching my 10 yr old daughter the secret to biscuits.
Many of you reading this will remember the biscuits he made as well as the spiritual bread he shared and will continue to share with us in our memories.
