Ashley Simmons Obituary

Simmons, Ashley B.
12/11/1934-9/26/2007
Died peacefully after a 2-year battle with lung cancer. He was born in Hartford, CT, grew up in Weymouth, MA, earned a bachelor of aeronautical engineering degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a master's degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder and served in the U. S. Air Force before beginning his 30-year career at TRW. Ashley enjoyed building model airplanes and playing golf, but the greatest joys in his life came from his daughter, Erin; and son, Sean. He will be remembered for his ability to find humor in all of life's events and his generosity and empathy in supporting those in need. He is survived by his wife, Debra Fitzgerald; children, Erin and Sean; twin brother, Winthrop (Carolyn); nieces, Lynn and Cindy; and nephews, Mark, Peter, Scott and Bruce. Services will be held 1:00pm Friday, October 5, 2007 at the Church of Jesus Christ of LDS, 5845 Crestridge Rd, RPV. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Wellness Community. Please sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.

To understand my Uncle Ash’s love of the aeronautics industry, you need look no further than the name selected for his pet cat, Aileron. Why the cat was named after either of the two movable flaps on the wings of an airplane that controls its banking and rolling I never quite made the connection or how it fit the Aileron's character. It seems to me that maybe it was just his fascination of how planes fly combined with his love of animals. I have a feeling that there are several discussions going on right now in Heaven to improve the banking and rolling of the Angels by adding an aileron to each of their wings. He was just that way, sharing the wisdom he gained through life’s experiences to make other people’s lives more manageable. Thanks for sharing your words of wisdom with me, Uncle Ash; they’ve assisted me greatly in taking on life’s challenges. You were truly one of a kind and will be sorely missed.

Debbie, Erin and Sean, You know we are all thinking of you at this difficult time. You were truly the "special joy" of Ash's life and what a wonderful life that was. Always remember breakfast at "Easters" and dinners at "Kelly's" for seafood. Our wish is to live our lives as Ash would have expected of us. The bonds of family he instilled with all of us will remain far into the future. We miss him and loved so vey much.

Peter, Zachary and I will miss Ash and his wonderful sense of humor and positive outlook. He was very devoted to Erin and Sean and boy did he love to golf. He use to tease Peter with all the golfing he was doing in the warm CA sun while it was cold and snowy here in MA.

I'm going to miss watching football games on TV with Ash. No matter who was playing, or who was winning or losing, his humor always made them hilariously funny.

He was a very special man who truly will be missed by everyone who knew him.
