Charles H. Erikson

Charles was born in Orange, New Jersey, September 4, 1930. He passed away September 21, 2015.
His parents were Elin and Charles and he has one brother, Richard of Virginia and two sisters Elaine, Cape Cod, MA and Carol, who preceded them in death.
He leaves Mary Lou, his loving wife of 57 years, his son, Thor Erikson (wife Christine) of Gig Harbor, WA; and daughter Brittney Bryant (husband James) of Houston, TX, two grandchildren, Derek and Taylor.
Charles graduated from West Orange High School, then graduated from US Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY, class of 1952.
Charles served as Lieutenant in the Navy. He was associated with the shipping industry all his life, both as President of West Coast Shipping Company, and Union Oil Tankers. Also worked for Navios Shipping Company in the Bahamas, where he and Mary Lou started their life together.
He was a lifelong attender of the Covenant Church and a devoted Christian family man.
Our hearts are heavy - a celebration of Charles' life will be at a later date on the beach near Palos Verdes, CA. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits

I'm so sad to hear of the passing of Charles Erikson, he was such a sweet man. I spent a lot of my teenage years at their house, and have such fond memories of the whole family. Mary Lou, Brittney and Thor I am so sorry for your loss. My prayers are with you and your families.

Chuck Erikson was a good guy. I worked with him for 20 years at Hendy International and West Coast shipping Co. (a part of UNOCAL) operating a fleet of oil tankers in the U.S. and international trade. He knew more about marine transportation of petroleum than anyone I ever met. He was my boss, my leader and my mentor. He was an honorable man; honest, fair and brave. All those who knew him are diminished by his passing.

Captain Erikson was a kind gentleman for sure. My condolences to the family for your loss. It's been a long time but we were your summer home neighbors on Cape Cod. When I knew Charles my maritime career was just starting out and we talked about the industry and sailing both for work and for fun. That was over 35 years ago! He was a good man and lived a good life.

It saddens me to write this. I had just turned 22 and recently out of the Army when I took a job with the Palos Verdes Post Office in July 1969. Little did I know then, that I would be your mailman for over 32 years before I retired in 2001. I watched Thor and Brittney grow up, from children to adulthood and having children of their own. Mary Lou's blue VW parked in the garage. Beautiful memories... The conversations we had over those years by the little white gate next to the mailbox, were never forgotten. I wasn't just the mailman, I became a close friend of all of you. Chuck and I would talk about kids, cars, you name it, and we most likely had a conversation about it. I am so sorry that you are going through this loss. Know that even though I have been retired 14 years and when I look back on my career this family is at the top of my list. I can only sign this one way. Love, Ron (The Mailman)

I had the pleasure of working for Captain Erikson in West Coast Shipping Operations from 1989 until he retired in I think it was 1992. He was a good mentor, a good leader, and a true gentleman. He will be missed.
