John Aseltine Obituary

John Charles Aseltine passed away on September 7, 2010 at the age of 49. He died as a result of his many serious health problems. At nine months old his neuroblastoma cancer was treated with extensive radiation. This treatment saved his life, but produced many associated orthopedic disabilities and kidney failure. In 1988 his brother donated a kidney, and the transplant has been a success for 22 years. John managed his situation with courage and determination, and accomplished much in the short time he had.

He was born November 29, 1960. He lived in Rancho Palos Verdes for the majority of his life. He attended Silver Spur Elementary, Malaga Cove Intermediate and Rolling Hills High School. His college education included time at USC, a BS degree from the University of Michigan in math and physics, post graduate work in physics at the University of Missouri, and as a doctoral candidate in physics at UCLA. As a student, he had summer employment at JPL. He later was a physics teaching assistant at University of Missouri and UCLA. His increasing health problems prevented him from continuing his studies at UCLA.

He is survived by his parents, Richard and Charlotte Aseltine, of Rancho Palos Verdes; sister Karen Aseltine and brother Bill Aseltine. A private family service will be held in the future to remember and celebrate his life.

I am so sorry to hear this news, and offer my sincere condolences to John's family. I shared an apartment with John when we were poor physics graduate students at UCLA. John was a very easy-going roommate, and I always enjoyed visiting John's parents during Thanksgiving. He'll be sorely missed.

John and I went to school together from elementary school through college. He was a great guy with an optimistic view on life and a great sense of humor. He made this world a better place. He will be missed.

John was a very good friend of mine in high school, especially my freshman year. He sat in front of me in Rosemary Claire's Western Civilization class. He shared with me that he had health problems earlier in his life, but I don't think anyone could tell, as his spirit was always very uplifting. He was a brilliant student. I have very fond memories of many wonderful conversations with him. I am very sad to hear of his passing. Randall Rhea

To the Aseltine Family and Friends, It was with great sadness I learned of John's passing. We used to drink our milk together at Silver Spur. May God's love and the love of your family bring comfort through this difficult time.
