Sending our love and thoughts to Mrs. Nishimura, Scott and Dale during this time. I feel so fortunate to have known Mr. Nishimura. He more than just a neighbor, he was family, and was like a grandfather to me.
I remember learning to ride my bike in the cul-de-sac in front of their house. One day I fell off my bike and scraped my knee - he got his Red Flyer Wagon out of his garage, scooped me up, and wheeled me back home.
What I remember most was his love for his garden. I enjoyed the fruits, vegetables, and flowers he shared with us. He taught me so much about gardening, composting, and how to safety prevent critters/bugs from getting his crops.
Mr. Nishimura was always so caring and patient, and I feel so fortunate to have known him.

Richard was a gentle, calm and kind man. He loved his family, church, gardening and community service. He always spoke with a smile and and connected with you with interest, listening with intent and asking about your welfare. He was always positive, with us on the receiving end of his fruits of loving labor, his apricots and vegetables, so fresh and organic! He will be missed, but has left a wide happy path for us to follow. Our deepest condolence to Jane, our dear cousin, and to Dale and Scott who cared for their dear father. We love you all.

I met Scott's parents in their home, which coincidentally was right next to my parent's neighborhood at the time. I went to several fun dinner parties there and enjoyed the Asian furnishings and art along with good conversation. Richard was a gentle soul and a very likeable person.

Aloha mai e Aunty Jane, Dale and Scott: Our love and our aloha are with you during this time of loss and transition. We believe that Uncle Richard is now reunited with his parents, siblings, and friends who left this earthly plane before him. We are sure that they are talking story, catching up, and perhaps growing amazing fruit on some heavily laden trees. We know we will see him again in the future and that he is cultivating plumeria to welcome us when our time is right. We love you all and hold you close today and all days.
In gassho,

I first met the Nishimura family, when we moved in across the street over 50 years ago. I always admired Mr. Nishimura's beautiful garden and know what a kind man he was. I pray that Jane, Dale, and Scott experience God's comfort and peace at this time. He surely made an impact on all of us and will be missed.

Mr. Richard Nishimura, the best backyard neighbor ever! So friendly, nice, cheerful, insightful and always willing to help me and my family. We would often talk over the backyard block wall about gardening and my family. He has the best Wisteria tree in Torrance, such beautiful flowers we get to enjoy every Spring. Richard would walk over Kaki, apples, and lemons from his fruit trees. His wife Jane made flower leis from Richard´s plumeria trees and agapanthus flowers that he tended too all year around. Gave me advice on how to control the mold on my plants during the winter and delivered healthy snacks to our kids when they were young. So thoughtful and pleasant. The kids enjoyed the drop-offs from Richard and Jane to celebrate first day of school, groundhog day, children´s day, Valentine´s day, and many of the less popular holidays.
Richard witnessed the bombing of Pearl Harbor as a child. He was a successful antenna design engineer at TRW where his contributions were significant. After he retired from TRW he and volunteered to organize the tremendous archive of history that made TRW a successful company. Always active in church, Richard would invite us to the Matsuri celebrations because he knew the kids would have fun eating local food, playing games, watching hula and listening to ukulele performers. Richard gave me his home-made wheel barrow years ago. It is extremely well designed and hand crafted, and will likely last another 50 years. Richard was fit, active, and his mind sharp through his early 90´s. He lived a great life. We are fortunate to have him as our neighbor and friend.

We met Jane and Richard through our friend, Scott. We will always remember Richard and Jane´s warmth and hospitality when we visited, their stories of the past, and the beauty of Richard´s garden. He will be missed.

Richard Nishimura was my friend and neighbor for fifty years, always a sweet and gentle person . Until recently I would see him gardening or working around his family home. One memory which is hard to forget, is of Richard climbing around his roof doing needed repairs. He was a lovely person and I miss him very much.

Scott, Jane and Dale,
We are so sorry to hear of your father/your husband's passing. He has been the backbone of your family and will be sorely missed. We are grateful that you have the faith in God to know you will see him again and the support of your church and friends to make it through this difficult time. We are thinking of you all.

An amazing journey of 96 years, from Hawai'i to Milwaukee [talk about weather shock!] to So Cal [a bit more temperate than Wisconsin]. Thanks be to God for his life and influences. We miss you and will see you again in time.
