Robert Thune Obituary

Robert Thune

Robert "Bob" Thune passed away early in the evening of January, 21, 2016 surrounded by his children. Born February 27, 1930 in Mitchell, South Dakota, Bob moved to Torrance in 1961. He is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Carlene. He is survived by his children, Kari (Joel) Daniel, Cheryl (Chris) Wilson and Brian Thune and grandchildren, Rachael, Fletcher and Jack (Lauren) Wilson. After graduating from South Dakota School of Mines & Technology and serving in the Navy at El Toro he received his Masters at the University of Wisconsin. While stationed at El Toro he met the love of his life Carlene. An employee of Hughes Aircraft, Bob worked 35 years as an engineer. A lifelong member of First United Methodist Church Redondo Beach, Bob enjoyed singing in the choir and lasting friendships from the church congregation. Bob loved deeply, honored friendships and had a quiet dependability that was admired by friends and family. A devoted husband, cherished father and generous Papa, he will be missed by all. The Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church, 243 S. Broadway, Redondo Beach. I just recently learned of Bob's passing, listed in the latest issue of the Hardrock (SDSM&T alumni publication). I met Bob when I was working at Hughes Aircraft Company around 1970 and learned he was from Murdo, SD, just 20 miles or so north of my hometown of White River, SD. We both went to the SD School of Mines in Rapid City, so had much in common. I recall him coming down to help me out when I was doing troubleshooting field work for a Hughes system in Yuma, AZ. He said something to the effect "A couple of South Dakota boys should be able to figure this out," which we did. He was definitely a good guy. I last saw him at one of the SDSM&T 5 year reunions. May he rest in peace.

It was a pleasure working for Robert those many years at Hughes and was sad to hear of his passing. My condolences to his family. He hired me to my first job out of college over 37 years ago and he taught me how to become a good engineer and to treat all people with respect at all times. I celebrate a life well lived and will cherish my memories of Bob forever.

Bob and Carlene were ideal neighbors. Carlene being the outgoing one, aggressively friendly and generous, while Bob was the quiet one, gentle and giving in his own way.

As a testament to Bob's modesty, for years and years he drove an old Plymouth Valiant in an era when most men were seeking sexier cars. An example of his patience can be seen by his automotive restoration project of what I think was a 1938 Dodge which occupied his garage as far back as I can remember.

Bob and Carlene created a wonderful family, with Kari, Cheryl, and Brian filling the home. All are great kids and have successful, flourishing lives.

I'm glad to have known all of them, and am proud to have been a part of their lives.

Bob and Carlene are both to be honored at this time. Both will be individually and collectively missed. All of our lives were enriched by having been part of the community.
