Eugene Levine Obituary

Eugene Benjamin Levine (Gene) passed away peacefully on June 1, 2017 at 90 years of age. Gene was the son of Emanuel and Mary Levine. Gene and Sheri shared a beautiful life together for 53 years. Gene is survived by his wife Sheri, brother Peter and sister-in-law (Geraldine.) Gene attended Oklahoma State on the GI Bill and received his undergraduate degree in two and a half years. Gene was an avid sportsman and was on the famous OSU wrestling team with coach Myron Roderick. After graduation, Gene headed to Trinity College, Dublin, to study in an honors program. He loved the Irish playwrights and philosophers. Gene returned from Trinity to receive a Master's of Arts degree in English literature in 1956 from Oklahoma State. Gene was a true patriot. He served his country in World War II where he was in the 457th parachute field artillery. He was decorated with the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and was in the Army of Occupation in Japan. Gene believed in equality for all mankind and was one of the original Freedom Riders. He risked his life and tested the laws to challenge segregation in America. The Freedom Riders changed America forever. Sheri said about Gene, "He was a glorious, larger than life, beautiful bear of a man. He was gentle, generous, kind, and always willing to fight for the underdog." Gene's memorial service with military honors will be held at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, on June 29 at 1:00 PM. I have lived in Boulder my entire life. I first crossed path with Jean, literally, one day when I was walking home from Boulder high school and Jean was headed up to the old gym at the university to work out. Over the years Gene got to be a friend, someone I deeply valued. I was doing a lot of work related travel in 1973 and missed the acknowledgment of Jeanne´s death. I feel an empty place in my world with Gene´s absence.

I am traveling the world with my wife and daughter. Recently a memory of Gene popped in my head and I wondered how he was. My search brought me here. I met Gene many years ago at a gym in Boulder. We would casually chat whenever We bumped into one another at the gym or Trident Cafe where he took his espresso, and as I remember would enjoy a cigar.

I went through a rough patch once with my vehicle payments and Gene helped me with a personal loan. I have never forgot that! I can't recall if I knew about his wrestling history, and I am not sure he knew I had wrestled for Vaughn Hitchcock at Cal Poly, but that may have been a factor in my like of Gene. RIP Gene, and belated condolences to his family!

Gene Always brought intelligent debates that would make you think about your beliefs and questions you were presenting. Even if you didn't agree or if it got a little heated, all would be cooled from a good workout. He was such an inspiration. I met Gene in 1989 and we still use his quotes.

I've been gone from Boulder for 25 years; you've stayed in my heart and memories all this time. I remember the workouts at the Pulse gym in downtown Boulder, and me walking near your home once or twice and talking to you as we met. I remember how truly unique you were and sharp, and am very proud to call you a friend. I never knew your Freedom Fighters background, nor ever saw you with hair on your head, but the photo they put up here of you helps to complete the picture. An honor. I hope in Heaven you get to do some more of those famous neck curls, my friend. You are missed.

Gene on love: If you cannot stop thinking of this person, crave them and feel as if your life cannot go on without them. Then and only then should you get married.

Although I never knew Gene personally, I always found him very intriguing. My family moved to Boulder in 1961 when I was starting Junior High at Baseline. My sister Kate was an art student at CU and Gene would model in life drawing class. He reminded Kate of our older brother, Rex, who was also a body builder and WW11 veteran. I would see Gene walking around Boulder and since I loved sports my goal was to build up my body like Gene's. Well, that never happened. I remember I was working out at the Boulder Athletic Club with a couple of friends and Gene was giving us pointers. Another time he was helping CU's quarterback, Bobby Anderson, do a bunch of reps and giving him pointers. Later, while a student at CU, I took up pipe smoking and Gene worked at the pipe and tobacco store on Broadway. Gene helped me buy a couple of pipes, pointing out what features to look for in a good pipe. He always seemed like such a great guy. After reading his life story I now know why.
