Hardy Frank Obituary

Hardy Long Frank, a longtime resident of Boulder who helped to establish the Women's Studies Program at the University of Colorado and who taught for many years in the University Writing Program, died on November 26th at the Academy at Bella Vista from complications associated with dementia. She was 86. Mary Hardy Long was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Johnson City, Tennessee, and New Orleans, the child of Lucinda Ann and Carroll H. Long, a physician. Choosing to be known as Hardy because of the surfeit of Marys among her contemporaries, she attended Wellesley College and pursued graduate studies in English at the University of Connecticut and the University of Missouri, where she met her future husband, James P. Frank; he was hired as a professor of philosophy at the University of Colorado, and the couple moved to Boulder in 1958. In 1970, she received a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado after completing a dissertation on Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. She took a scholarly interest in the cult of the Virgin Mary and she was an early champion of the significance of the late medieval visionary Margery Kempe. She was a great reader, both in English and French. She loved the English language and the subtleties of its usage. Her affinities and activities were many and varied. She played the piano and the violin, was a group leader for the Experiment in International Living, and at the height of the Civil Rights movement taught for a summer at Miles College in Alabama. In 1966, she received a Fulbright Fellowship to conduct research at the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, where she moved for a year with her family. Later years were spent abroad in London and Canterbury. She came up with the name of the Jarrow Montessori School and was a member of the editorial board of the feminist journal Frontiers. She wrote a history of the Methodist missionaries in her family. She served on the Boulder Public Library Commission and the Grievance Committee of the Colorado Supreme Court and was an active member of the board of the Boulder Bach Festival. She helped to bring the Tea House from Dushanbe to Boulder. She was a woman of lively intelligence and true dedication who possessed an unfailing grace and wit. Her marriage to James Frank ended in divorce. Hardy Long Frank is survived by four siblings, Jane Hardin, Edwin Long, Frances Long, and Jerry Long; two children, Edwin Frank and Page Zarecki; and two grandchildren, Emma Karasz and Augustus Frank. A memorial service will be held in Boulder in the spring of 2018.

I was the first Director of the Women Studies Program at CU and worked with Hardy to get the program approved and launched. I admired her so very much that I wanted to be as urbane and lovely as she was. I remember when I freaked out about turning 30 (as these were the days of not trusting anyone over 30), she talked me down not just about that fear, but saying that in France, women are only beginning to be seen as sexy in their 30's! She had a very modern feminist attitude! She will be very missed.

Hardy belonged to a wonderful family. She gets her love of the English language from her intelligent and witty mother Lou Ann, who was my mother's best friend. After school, Jane, Hardy's sister, and I would sit at the kitchen table and listen to the two mothers.

With every conversation I had with Hardy, I walked away smiling at her wit and having learned some new. If only there were a few more Hardys in all this our lives.

I worked with her when she was in charge of the Experimental Studies Program at CU in the 1970s. My memories of her are that she was a wonderful leader. So knowledgeable and smart herself, yet making room for us kids in our 20s! A kind, generous person! I was so sorry to read that she had passed away -- Michael Clifford

One of the most interesting and intelligent persons I've known. I've loved the whole Long family all of my life. Hardy's mother and my mother were the dearest of friends. Anne Parks-Johnson

Oh how I loved Aunt Hardy!!! And this picture is wonderful and captures so much of her intelligence and lively spirit. My sister Lucinda and I used to talk about how we loved her and wanted to grow up to be just like her. She had such a way of making me feel special and welcome when we would come visit, always putting a smile on my face. I loved her love of the drink, for better or for worse, because I love it too! And she seemed to be able to drink with poise and elegance, as she did everything. And yet her laugh would just make you smile through and through. Oh I miss her! Love and hugs, Edwin and Page. I'm so glad I got to see her (and you, Edwin) in New York recently. So many wonderful memories. Much, much love, Jane (daughter of Frances)
